Hello, I am expanding my 1 acre vegetable production to 4 acres. What recommendations for a cat 1, 1 or 2 row planter do you recommend. Will an older planet Jr work for more than corn? Thanks Jon

How does the Cole 12 mx and the Planet Jr compare to the Covington and even the JD 71 for a all around planter, looking to do a variety of seed sizes.

The Cole MX is made in China, I believe? Cheaper $ and built cheaper. Ken Sweet

The 71 deere planters work great down to sorghum seed. They will also plant smaller seed abou the size of a bb with the sugarbeet bottoms. If interested in a 71 deere let me know. I have about forty of them in inventory. One to four rows.

You can find 2-row JD 71 planters on eBay for $1K plus shipping. I used my 71 to plant Austrian winter peas and bell beans last month (growing season here in the North Sacramento Valley is Oct-May). The double disc openers were clogging with pebbles (my soil is gravely loam). So I removed one of the discs on each opener to make single disc openers. Worked OK.

Good luck.

I have both 1-row and 2-row planters which I use to plant between 3 and 4 acres of sweet corn, beans and pumpkins. For pumpkins I use my Cole 12MX single row planter because I like the way it plants hills instead of single seeds. I use 1 row because the wide row spacing, between 8 and 12 feet depending on variety being planted.

I use both my JD 71 and Cole 12MX to plant sweet corn. I have found little benefit to using my 2-row because I stagger my sweet corn planting only planting 6-12 rows at a time. With the Cole12MX I can plant and fertilize at the same time, saving both time while using less fertlizer. Unless you add a side dresser to the JD 71 you would either have to broadcast your fertilizer using much more than if you side dressed it.

My kids prefer the Cole 12MX because they find it easier to set up. All the older Cole 12MX planters (like mine) were made in the USA. The new green painted ones are also made in the USA and the Blue painted ones are made in China. Parts are interchangeable.

I also have a Webb precision planter for planting small seed. It is a fantastic planter but I rarely use it. Instead I tend to use my push Precision Planter for small seeded veggies.
