I have a small bx1860. I need to seed about 1 acre this year, and 2+ next year. I have already sprayed the weeds and they are pretty much dead. What should I do next? the soil seems pretty good, but I am sure it will need a little bit of working.
Are there implements I can rent for my tractor to help with the seeding?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

I would suggest breaking up the soil. A tiller or disk would be great.

As for spreading the seed I am sure you could find a tractor mounted spreader but a push or handheld spreader should be fine for an acre or two.

I remember reading on some forum that it wouldn't be a good idea to use a tiller, that it would leave clumps behind forever.

There are plenty of threads covering this. Some have some great information and some have some down right poor information. First off, I have some questions for you.

What chemical did you spray the weeds with?

What type of grass are you seeding?

Has there ever been turf grass at this spot?

How rough is the ground, does it need smoothing?

What type of irrigation is available for watering? Automatic?

First, I'd mow it down as low as possible to get rid of the old grass & weeds. Then you might try a landscape rake to bust up the remaining turf a bit to give the seeds a place to root in. Seed and fertilize the lot with broadcast spreader pulled behind the tractor.

I sprayed with some off brand roundup.

No turf grass, just corn and weeds.

The ground has been graded. It doesn't feel bad or hard. The landscape designer actually commented on how surprised he was that the ground and soil we have felt and looked pretty good.

Most of what I am planting has a sprinkler system. About 15K sq ft have the "irrigation" from the sewer field, I am guessing I will have to water that with some sort of sprinkler until the roots get deep enough.

Thanks,

So you are in Wichita huh? me too, sort of, Benton, but west enough that I consider it Wichita.

I'd hit it with the tiller then drag it smooth with haro or some wire fence. Then seed, water, apply starter fert about 5-7 days later and then just keep it moist.

Not sure how late you are down south for planting. We are still good for bluegrass but fescue is a little late.
