Selecting the correct RPM

With the 2032R I would not be concerned about fuel consumption. You could waste fuel or try to conserve fuel while doing the same tasks for a days work and could not buy a candy bar for the savings difference imo. Five gallons of fuel can get a lot of work done. I would avoid long idling times though, better to shut the tractor off.

Tasks such as mowing, tilling and snow blowing I prefer pto rated speeds. Box Blading, raking and loader work are at various speeds that feel appropriate to me. YRMV.

I guess I did use the words ( wasting fuel ) that really wasn't my point, I was really more concerned with damaging something on the tractor because traveling at 2500 RPM's just seamed like the engine was doing more work than it needed, kinda like putting your truck in first gear and putting the pedal to the metal and watching your RPM gauge max out and your going 5 miles per hour and your truck is begging you to shift. But you are right I did say wasting fuel.

That concern makes more sense than wasting fuel, but here too, i think the engineers have you covered. These engines are designed to be wound out to full throttle or close to it and operate on a continuous basis with varying loads. A chipper for example will sometimes put a very heavy load on the machine, and at other times almost none.

Anyway, like others have said, it becomes very intuitive. After some more seat tube, I'm sure you'll have a handle on it. I think the fact that you're interested in knowing how to use it correctly is a very good indication.

What does the operator's manual recommend ?
Do not be geared high and lug the engine for an extended interval of time .
A couple hundred rpm over minimim will not wear out the engine in your's, your children's and grand children's lifetimes .
Rated rpm is essential for pto generators. Ofher loads are yes, no and maybe. For blowing snow I max throttle bringing the rpms to 2600, well past the 2200rpms for 540rpm pto.

I use about 2500 rpm for PTO work because my 2025R is overpowered for almost anything that I need. I had a 4010, 18.5 hp, JD for around 9 years. Always used the PTO setting on it and needed it.
