I have a 1250 gal septic tank behind my house that I want to hook into from my new pole barn. I don't want to dig it up right now because it is so wet but I would like to run my sewer line out and away from my building so I can do some grading to get the water away from the building.

What I need to know is if there is a standard inlet and outlet height on septic tanks? This tank is the older 2 piece design and I can't find any information on anything but the newer precast tanks that have the top section right on the top of the tank and not right in the middle like mine is.

I just want to make sure I can get enough fall to the inlet before I dig all the way to it.

Installed one on our building lot 4 years ago, 4'' pipe going in & out ends of tank . You will need enough fall for water to run ( down hill ) , when we did mine set a level on pipe so level bubble was not centered, dropping just a little on the end to the tank . This is just how mine was done , hope you find this helpful , or just goggle septic tank installation. Steven:)

Get a soil probe and you can find your inlet and outlet pipes with it and measure how deep they are. Most hardware stores have em.

I work with septics all the time. Each manufature is different. the best thing to do is to dig the front and back of the tank. The oulet is usaly 6" to 8" below the inlet. I have seen a few less the 3" below. Make sure your fall is right or you will get alot of blockages going to the septic tank. I do not replace alot of lines so i do not know what the correct fall should be.

1/4" per foot to the tank slope of the sewer line
1/8" per foot tank to field

Here in my area most 1250 gallon concrete tanks are about 6 foot wide, 10 foot long and 56 inches from the bottom of the tank to the bottom of the inlet hole. (outside measurents) Outlet holes are normally 4" lower than the inlet. The top of the inlet pipe is about 6 to 8" lower than the top of the tank.

What is the fall between where you want to exit your pole bldg. and the tank location (finished grade) and how far is it? I think that your asking how deep to "stub" out of your new bldg. for now? Is this so?

I don't know, that's why I was wondering if there was any standard measure with reference from the top of a tank to down to an inlet port. I know where the tank is but it was over 20 years ago when we put it in and I can't remember now how deep the inlet was from the top of the tank.

I know It's going to be close because before I cleared out the trees for the barn it was all pretty level but the building did end up being a little lower after I stripped all the top dirt and leveled everything out. I stubbed out of the building as high as I could and I have dug a ditch out from the building about 30'. I wanted to get it away from the building because I'm putting the electric feed wire and the sewer pipe in the same ditch and needed to be able to work in front of the building and that big ol roll of electric wire was always in the way. Just by sight it looks like I'll be ok from where the end of the pipe is but I still wont know for sure until I find the inlet of the tank.

It's not a big deal, like I said I was just wondering if there was a standard measure on tanks and Knight1 and dawzie pretty much answered that question for me. Thanks everybody!

You can get all of your depths this way!

Well I guess I could if it wasn't for all that concrete that is now covering the area. I do have access to the clean out cover but it is on the other end of the tank from the in and out ports that were used when it was put in. I may be able to see where they are this way though.
