Service life of a well maintained Deere 4000-Ten series

I had to laugh at this one - I find myself here regularly! Every now and then the "advertising campaigns" do their job and I consider a new tractor... Run down the list; newer, "better", bigger, no hours.... But then I come back to earth; Mine is PAID FOR (has been for several years...), meets my needs, is reliable, and is low hours! And did I mention it's paid for? :thumbsup:

Only reason for me to get a new tractor (until mine starts wearing out) is to go bigger. But that also means more fuel use, new attachments, a payment, buying new manuals, etc, $$$! And would be a "want" purchase, cuz I don't NEED a bigger tractor!

Each person is different and has their own justifications for buying/not buying. But when I get the new tractor bug, I run through the plus/minus list and stick with my good ol' reliable 2009 tractor!

I agree. But then, in the tractor world, your 2009 tractor is barely broken in.

I've had 3 different primary tractors over the past 10 years. First change was fire loss. Second and third were upgrading size as my needs severely changed.

As a secondary tractor I just purchased a 30 year old 47HP tractor. It's already proven it's longevity. It will outlast me.

Appreciate all the feedback here...I DON'T need to impress anybody as I am the ONLY person in this neighborhood who even has a CUT...the 25 other households around me have only a light-duty lawn tractor aside from the guy a quarter mile distance who has an Ingersoll garden tractor. Tenn_Blue is right....if your machine meets your requirements and is reliable and paid for, a new one is a WANT and not a NEED.

I want to see where this thread all goes and just add that I don't think I'll get rid of my 4410. If anything I'll buy another one. I can then keep the fel on one for the winter and the snowblower on the other. If one breaks down I have a spare.

Yeah, I agree...

Mine is a 4400...a few years older then the 4410 series. A local dealer has a 4300 (sync-reverser transmission, like my 4400) with under 200 hours. He wants $12K for the machine and if I had the money, I'd snap it right up.

The local Agco dealer had a 4310 with a full set of JD 70 lb front weights, single rear hydraulic along with the fel ones on the side. Hydro with no mid pto, turf tires in good shape, 600 hours for $8000. I just didn't have the money but it sure hurt to leave it there. So now I'm slowly fixing up a MF 245 that will eventually get traded up to another JD.

I just used my father-in-law's John Deere 955 with a bit over 10,000 hours on it. It's never been rebuilt and is still on the original tires! I ran a bucket-full of dirt out to the woods and we used it to run a 15 kw generator all day for a big welding project and it never missed a beat. I wouldn't worry at all about one or two thousand hours.

TWO HUNDRED HOURS!!! Is that a typo? And Roy....you don't NEED the machine...WANT, yes.

With those hours and the maintenance you have provided, you couldn't replace that tractor for a reasonable price. Check the prices on Tractorhouse.com - your tractor is good for at least $12,000 I would think. Why buy again and lose money - the ads get pretty slick these days and do manage to convey a need, then a want or a must have.
Your machine is good for a lot longer than you probably think. Maintain it, enjoy it and the money you saved can go towards something you actually need
