I started my BX2200 up for the first time this season last Sunday. It ran perfectly for about forty minutes then the mower started shaking like something was out of balance. When I went to shut the mower down, I heard a bang. I immediately shut the tractor down. When I looked under the tractor, I found that the coupler had come off of the mid pto. When the coupler went, it took two cooling fins from the casting located directly above the PTO and the oil filter with it.

My question is does this sound like a coupler failure? or does it sound like the mower deck was re-installed incorrectly when it was in for winterizing service last December? It seems to me if the tech had not seated the coupler completely, I would have experienced the problem as soon as I engaged the mid pto.

Regards,

Mark

Mark, it just sounds to me as if whoever hooked up the PTO driveshaft last just didn't get it properly seated and locked into position. I once saw a big tractor with a big brush hog start to mow down the side of a road and I'll bet he didn't go 50 feet before the PTO driveshaft came loose at the tractor. It sure was noisy with that driveshaft flopping and banging around until the mower blades stopped turning, and the guy on the tractor did about the only thing he could do; sat right there and waited on it to stop.

Sounds like the coupling was not latched (till it clicks). there have been a few other threads of the same problem. Usually damage is limited to the plastic fan and/or the small fuel tank that's down there.

Sounds like you just had a bit of bad luck.

I had the same thing happen to me last yr. I can only blame that one on myself though. I didn't have the PTO coupler latched as well as I thought. I was lucky. I only had to replace the filter.

Maybe, but you never know. If it was mostly hooked up right it could take a while for the PTO shaft to work loose. If your tractor is still under warranty and the dealer was the one to install the mower deck, then I'd say that regardless of whether the coupler failed or it was hooked up wrong that it would be the dealer's responsibility to fix it.

Mostly hooked up right? That is still wrong. If one mostly changes the oil and the only thing missed was putting the plug back in the oil pan, well that is mostly right...

Whoever put the PTO shaft on goofed. It's a audible click when the pin clicks in the groove of the PTC shaft.

I think you are right. But my point was that regardless as to whether someone made a mistake or if there was an equipment failure that the dealer is responsible for fixing it.

as the others have said, sounds like the person who installed the mower did not have the shaft seated. i always MAKE sure i hear it click and will take it off and redo it if i am not sure.sorry u had such a major happening. would check with the dealer that service it tho.

If the dealer was the one to put the MMM back on the tractor, they would be at fault. It don't seem to be equipment failure when not installed correctly.
In the first year of owning my B7500HST I had a leaky hydro line on my FEL and my dealer replaced the line within a few days, that's equipment failure.

I would like to send out a most grateful "thanks" to all those who responded to this thread. You gave me enough courage to call the person at Kubota who oversees all authorized repair shops in my area. I was getting the run-around from my dealer, and he put an end to it! He told them if they removed the deck during winterizing, then they are responsible for fixing the problem, no "ifs," "ands," or "buts!" As I said in my previous post, I have had problem with this dealer's service department when I had the steering wheel cylinder replaced under warranty. This will be the last time my tractor goes to this shop.
