Something arbingated the shaft seal on the fel pump for the Bolens. I do not know what brand the pump is and there are no markings that I can find except for what looks like casting numbers on the three main pieces. Attached are pictures of the input end plate showing the loused up seal area. Ho can I clean that seal out without ruining the pump housing? Also, how can I determine who the manufacturer is? Failing that, might I be able to get a seal with just the shaft diameter and dimensions of the casting? It appears the seal must be sort of slipped in to the recess of that casting.

Take the parts to a hydraulic shop. I'm sure they can easily get a seal for that pump just by going with the dimensions instead of the pump's maker.

Is that shaft seal just a typical press in type? I don't want to try peeling it out only to ruin the casting.

Generally "shaft" seals has numbers stamped/moulded into them, usually on side away from the lip, yeah in your case probably on side in casting that you can not see...

If you have good calipers you can measure shaft size and "shell" size of existing seal you can do internet search and probably find correct seal...

Probably going to have to suck it up and remove seal to get the numbers....

Can you tell if innermost circle is seal body and not part of casting...

If it is seal body you can gently drive it out with appropriate size socket....

If only I could. There's a ledge in the casting separating the bushing from the seal, effectively closing off any access to pushing that seal out. There is an oil groove through that ledge that connects to both bushings. Tried placing various tools in there to pry the seal wall out with no success. My son suggested maybe freezing the seal remains or maybe dimpling the side wall even at the risk of notching the casting a bit. That would not compromise the seal effect with the casting. Another idea is to tack weld a flat washer to the inside of that seal remains. I like that idea best of all. Tack it at four points, let cool and then drive it out from the back side. Another idea is to gently file or saw through the remains, but concern there is to accidently make a groove in the casting wall and that would probably leak. Any concerns with the welding idea?

I sized a washer to fit inside the seal remains and tacked it four places. While it was all still 'warm' I gently tapped it out. It's clean as a whistle! Thanks to my Son for the suggestion....

It's all cleaned up now and assembled.....but....what should I torque the bolts to? The center two are cap bolts, the rest are hex head and all are the same length. Is there a sequence Similar to head bolt pattern? Start at the center and work alternate clockwise?

7/16 grade 5 will be torqued to 50ft lbs and in a clockwise fashion starting at the center. If it leaks, I'll re-torque to something higher. Maybe.
