What is a good shale/stone size for use on a driveway or road? I have seen 2RC, 2 modified, RC Select Granular Material and 2A Subbase.

Does anyone know that differences in these or pro's and con's of them?

Thanks..

Modified is what I use, it is a mix of fine and larger pieces that pack down. I am getting 40 ton in a month to put a crown on our driveway.

Around here the choice is crusher run, which is a mix of everything from about 1" down to fine dust. It compacts well and all the different sizes lock together over time. Quarries will have different mixes, sizes, and names for it, but everyone has a mix that's perfect for driveways, road bases, etc. Around here, the crusher run mixes are 21A, 21B, CTA, 24, 25, and 26.

Stuff labeled with a straight #2 would be a larger uniform stone in this area (also called "rail ballast", since it's what they use under railroad ties). That would be OK for a lower level base for a driveway, but not for the top layer.

As said Crusher Run is the best, in Virginia it's 21 A or 21 B. The fine crushed stone particles pack down and keep the larger stone in place creating a hard packed surface that lasts a while. Loose stone will move around on you and rut.
