Shallow sockets ??

I was driving a 3/8 x 5" lag bolt 3" deep into a concrete floor to bolt a small sheet metal break down. An impact driver works good for this but every socket I have is too deep. I had to stick a nut in the socket to take up space so I could keep downward pressure on the lag bolt. Otherwise it would not screw in, it would begin to strip out.

Does anyone make shallow sockets for this circumstance? Do they have a special name?

I have make sockets for uses like that by taking one to the grinder and shortening it as necessary.

I occasionally run across some cheap sockets that are only one nut deep. Usually in one of those 7.99 homeowner tool kits.

But there are some better ones made. Probably many other MFG's, too

Alot of higher end deep sockets are broached in such a way that the hex is only about a half inch deep. I know snap on does.

:thumbsup: Ha, that's a good idea, why didn't I think of that. I have 2 buckets of old rusty, dull and worn out tools that I am saving for ballast or my estate auction.

Last century? Ugh. And I thought my set of craftsman shorties were cutting edge technology. Actually, I have both sets, i.e. deep sockets and 'standard' short ones.

Id hate to ruin a perfectly good socket by grinding it down to size. A steel rod cut to size and struck into socket with paper should work. Once work is completed, the rod can be punched out if it does not come out easily. I think I would try this first.

Sometimes cutting or bending tools is the only way. For this use I'd have just put a spacer in it like you did. Did you pre drill a hole?
