Hi! Just did my first deck removal / blade sharpen on my LTX1050.

Everything is fine, all nice and balanced.

Whew! Is there an easier way to sharpen blades w/out removing the blades and the deck?

Thanks!

Oh Lordie!

Say it ain't so....I gotta do this EVERY TIME?

Oh well. I didn't let 9-11 stop me, I won't let this stop me either.

dunno if it works for you in yer situation, but some keep an xtra set of blades on hand - sharpened, balanced, ready to go on short notice...

That's why mine only get done every five years !!!! (we only mow Jan-May),
as for 9/11, well at least one grub won't be causing the planet any further heartache, still not enough for those who perished R.I.P.

Yes! There absolutely is!. It is called the Trade-In Program. Might be a bit tough on the wallet to buy a new mower whenever the blades get dull, but it is much easier on the back. :D

Ok, there is an easier way. You don't need to remove the deck to remove and sharpen the blades. With a floor jack and jack stands, you can probably raise the mower to about a 30 degree angle. Then, wedge a chunk of wood between the deck and blade and use a big breaker bar to take the bolt out.

Once you do this a couple of times and get used to doing it, it's not a hard task at all.

I'm not familiar with that mower, but if it has grease zerks, make sure you have the right setup to get to all of them without removing the deck. When you don't ever take the deck off, you can neglect lubrication.

John don't be discouraged it gets easier each time you do it.

Wedges are a big help when it comes remounting the deck and never seize on the spindle threads helps too.

I wanted a real close cut so with the use of some red lock tight I fitted a few washers between the blades and the spindles...now I can quickly sharpen the blades without taking them off with an angle grinder.

UPDATE:

Ok, I've done it a dozen times now. Broke the deck belt, replaced it. Sharpened blades, fixed a thing or two. You were right, it's easier now. Just pop it off, do the work, and pop it on. I've lost my deck virginitidy. :)
