Does anyone out there sharpen their MMM blades while still on the deck?.....best way to do it??

It only takes a few minutes to drop the deck. I sharpen them off the deck and make sure that they are balanced. It is also a good time to inspect the belt, gear oil level and drive line, also very easy to grease when it is off.

I have to agree with Kevin; it is just so easy to detach the deck that I try to do it every 10 hours and do the complete service (clean the deck, grease, check gear box oil, and sharpen the blades. I probably spend 1/2 or so doing this.

I do touch them up with a small air grinder, when the deck is off. if they are real bad I take them of and run them on the wheel and check the balance.

I sharpen about once a month and have several sets of blades. Rather than take the deck off, I jack the tractor up from the rear and use jackstands on the sides. A 30mm socket coupled to an air impact pulls the bolts off fast. If you don't have an air impact gun, it's going to be MUCH harder to remove the blades.

Now you have an excuse to buy more tools <g>

W O W !!!!!!!

I am planning on removing the deck and blades after this cutting season, but I am pushing 100 hours! I can't imagine having enough time (and will) to remove the blades every 10 hours..

I leave my deck on the tractor and remove each blade, sharpen, balance, and reinstall. I hate reinstalling the PTO.

Rouge; I have to admit to being a little bit of freak about maintainence. It only takes me about 1/2 hour or so to so the service, and it makes reaching the grease fittings much easier. I also have had to mow damp (not wet) grass several times this year, so I have had to clean the deck often.

I have never cleaned my deck either. Every once in a while, a plate of dry grass falls off and gets whacked by the blades. I figure so long as I don't scratch up the paint on the bottom, it should never rust. And if it does, it is pretty heavy gauge, so it should take a long time to go through!

I have never washed my tractor either. I am afraid that water on the deck would just funnel in to the bearings.

I do change the oil and I did the 50 hr service. I do grease the deck a few times a season... And I agree it is MUCH easier with the deck off.
