Sharpening MMM Blades

 / Sharpening MMM Blades #21
I'm a Tool & Die Maker and I just use a 4 1/2" angle grinder with the blades in a vise. While I have sharpened blade still attached, I think it is better to remove so the balance can be kept and to check and lube the bolts. I use anti seize on them.

I don't have a MMM, but for my riding mower and my rear mower for my Kubota, I have several sets of blades. If I am in a hurry, I can install the spares without removing the deck. Make SURE the deck is blocked up with blocks, don't trust the hydraulics. I use railroad ties that I cut into 2' lengths.

Well, today I pulled the blades again, removed the dust caps & started pumping grease. The left & right spindle each took 14-16 pumps [air gun]. The middle required about 25. Your advice was right on! It is scary how 'grease starved' the mower deck spindles were.
Here's my question, for the middle spindle, the zerk at the edge of the oil bath is the one that eventually produced grease down below. What does that other middle grease fitting serve?

Tdog -

I'm glad the advice helped - possibly one of the best threads that I've read since being at TBN!

As far as the "center zerk on the middle spindle gearbox" - that's a good question! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'll hit it a couple times - but since I don't see grease coming out anywhere - but I get resistance - I leave it at that.

Just taking a stab here: if the zerk at the edge produced grease below (so hitting the bottom bearings) - maybe the other hits the "top bearings" - but somehow the machining of the gearbox spindle doesn't allow for a single grease port?

Oh well - I won't be using my MMM for a while longer: getting another *helping* of the white stuff this morning - @ 4-5" and counting (as of 6 AM) - gotta love New England! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Cheers,

Dan

On my MMM there are 3 grease fitting near center of mower. 1 is the Center Bearing. The other 2 are for the belt tension pulley and pivot. Neither fitting should require very much grease.

( BTW - I did the metric conversion: 1 3/16" = 30.something mm - so that is *close 'nuff*. To be exact - take your inch measurement as a decimal (1 3/16' = 1.1875) and multiply by 25.4 (1" = 25.4 mm)

Personally - I went out to Sears and bought a whole set of metric combination wrenches and 1/2" drive sockets - I think I've now got every size for my 'Bota - probably set me back @ $150.)

Here is a Pittsburgh crescent wrench from Harbor Freight Tools . It is has a 1 3/4" max. jaw and 15" handle for $7.99. It comes in handy on a number of large nuts and bolts and works well on the MMM blades.

Does it come in both Metric & SAE or only SAE????? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have the 60" MMM on my Bx23, I am going to check the grease load and see if it has been addressed since last year. Mine is brand new and has not seen any use. I'll keep ya'll posted on hte findings.

It took about 8 pumps each on my almost brand new 60" MMM. Since I went & picked it up still in it's crate, I'll not pass judgement on my dealer, I didn't let it stay there but a few hr's after it was delivered by KMA.

It would be wise for all to check... Great informative thread...
