The MX8 Semi mount poses some unique issues for blade sharpening. First it has two sets of blades for a total of 4. Second it is a semi mount with a set of two hydraulic height controlled rear wheels that are used to raise and lower the rear of the unit.

I can raise the cutter up to a max travel height of about 10-12 inches off the ground. I am not going to crawl under this thing and angle grind the blades. It weighs close to 1800lbs.

Does anyone have any clever/safe ideas on how to get this job done without having to take it to the dealer?

I have a 10' Woods pull type twin spindle cutter, it has four blades. I also was not going to crawl under that thing and try to sharpen the blades so I went and bought a new set of blades. My cutter deck has access ports behind the two spindle gear boxes. I removed the old blades and replaced with new blades from the top.

I then clamped the old blades to a bench and sharpened them up good with an angle grinder. Not cheap, not fast, but the end result was good.

Unless you have a pit to drive over your going to have to jack it up and block it.

Crawling under it should give you the heeby-jeebys, use some blocks that you trust.

Just did a LX6 and I used a farm jack to get it up and then used 4 large fir rounds sitting in the 'need-to-split' pile. Those suckers are NOT going anywhere. Had no fear of crawling under it then.

Allways use set of heavy duty jackstands and a 4 1/2 angle grinder.

Works fine, remember if you are cutting anything except grass it may be good to have dull blades. If you cut a sapling with a sharp blate, it makes a sharp point that can create flat tires, and encourage regrowth. Dull blades are more likely to splinter sapling, and are less likely to cause flats.

Just be very careful crawling under anything. There was a local stock car racer that was killed a couple of years ago when his car fell on him. He was using conctere blocks.

I got a bunch of steel wire wrapped around my blades once while mowing, and I needed to get under it to cut it loose... I was out in a field and no way to lift it up high enough to get it loose.. So I found a place where I could back the bush-hog and let it hang over a bank.

I was able to stand up under the bush-hog and get it loose real easy.

BUT I MADE SURE THE TRACTOR WOULD NOT ROLL BACKWARDS.

After doing that, I later made made ramps out of "Railroad Cross-Ties" so I could back my tractor on with the bush-hog, and I can sharpen my blades.... I cut 2 pieces of the 'cross-ties' with a chainsaw to make wheel-chocks, so the tractor wouldn't roll backwards... and I also keep my parking brake on, and my bucket down...SAFETY FIRST! :D

It really comes in handy!
