I feel kinda stupid but here goes... When you go to TSC to get shear bolts for the TSC PHD and I also need them for a NH S68 baler, do you just get the right size and grade of bolt (grade 2) or are there specific bolts called shear bolts? I was at TSC last night and all I could find was grade 2 bolts but nowhere did it say 'shear bolt'.

Thanx

Just get grade 2 bolts, nuts, and lock washers in the correct size, (you'll probably lose the nut and washer). I just bought 3 from TSC. Asked the clerk where the shear bolts were, he just went to grade 2 bolts and got them.

Ditto what normde2001 said and I'll further emphasize the locking nuts. My wife was 'hoggin the other day and she came in nearly in tears thinking she broke the tractor. She described what I thought was a broken shear bolt. I went out to find that it hadn't broken but the non-locking nut had come off and the bolt had worked itself out. The parts were all lying on the deck so I just reassembled it and got her on her way again. Bought some locking nuts later that day /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

grade 2 is what to use for shear bolts - just get the right size. There are no specific "shear bolts" per sey, just the right grade.

barticus73,

TSC does have shear bolts in a package of 5 for mowers on the wall at the one I go to. If memory serves they were about $4-5. Much cheaper to by the bolts in bulk. They charge $1.19 per # for grade 2 hardware.

If you use a bolt that is longer where the shoulder is exposed you don't need the lock washer. All that you have to do is jam the nut into the shoulder. You will probably loose the nut when the bolt shears anyway.

You need to make sure that a longer bolt won't contact or interfere with anything else. Before all the paranoid safety people go crazy; this is only a suggestion not a recommendation. I only do this when I don't have the lock washers or correct lenght bolts available.
