J.D. X530 47 Blower
Have a new X530 (July) and dealer mounted the 47 snowblower couple weeks ago. First time out sheard both pins in about 10 minutes on 3-4 inches of soft snow. No wierd noises that I could hear. One was missing and the other broken but still in place. The dealer salesman brought me 4 pins (none included with blower) and they were different than what was o.e.. New ones #M154492 as listed in manual but the sheared pins were fully treaded bolts that are marked TVS 10.9. Now do not know if I got wrong pins from factory or I own a yellow boat anchor. My old single stage broke one pin in 18 years on two tractors.

I just posted a comment at FarmKing Buhler 740 Snow Blower about shear pins. I use bolts, just select the grade with caution.

On a long gravel driveway, I use 5/16" x 2" bolts on the main shaft and 1/4" x 1.5" on the augers. Fully threaded, carriage, hex head...what ever. I go through a lot.

what caused the bolts to shear.Something get stuck in the blower.Takes a lot to shear a pin especally in 3 or 4 inches of snow.Do you have to much tilt and digging into the surface

On flat concrete. Did not pick anything up. No ice no junk. It was actually adjusted too high. I was leaving 1/2 inch or so of snow.

On;y one I've broken so far is because I started pushing heavy snow too fast.

having owned my 455 and blower for 15+ years now I will say that these shear bolts will pop if you hit so much as a frozen dog turd. I don't use mine much any more, but I went to grade 5 bolts and keep them tight. They still shear if you hit something hard.

I have a JD Broom, and it used to break the shear bolts twice a year, and they are a pain to get to. I was using common bolts in them, thinking I was saving the equipment. But I didn't realize that shear bolts are actually a hardened bolt, as common hardware just breaks in no time. I also found out that the tighter you tighten them, the sooner they shear off.

Make sure you are using hardened bolts, and if they keep breaking, consider going to the next harder bolt.

Hi,

The JD shear bolts for my JD 59" and a friends JD 47" blower are hex head bolts without threads in the shear area.

My dealer tells me that the JD 1/4-20 shear bolts are interchangable with common grade 5 bolts from the JD dealer showroom bolt bin.

The fully threaded screws you mentioned are probably a weaker steel and the threads make them weaker still.

Also all shear bolts should be secured with elastic stop nuts, they have a nylon insert to keep vibration from loosening them and letting the bolt drop off.

I would suggest first getting the JD stock shear bolts and asking the dealer about interchangability with a grade of common bolt.

Have the dealer show you how to read the grade markings on grade 5 and grade 8 bolt heads that they stock. DO NOT use grade 8 as they are stonger and your blower might be damaged if they don't shear when needed.

Since you are blowing on pavement check to see that the auger is not grinding away on the pavement. Anytime I shear a bolt the rock or tree limb is still jammed between the auger or impeller and the housing.

Good luck

Problem appears to have been the pins that came with blower. After replacing them with correct pins, (the part number listed in the manual,) I have pushed it hard into packed drifts and got into some ice chuncks I would rather not have with zero problems. Do not know if it came from factory with incorrect pins or if dealer needed a couple and then got replaced with threaded bolts.
