I think some one may have already asked this but I couldn't find the thread...Any way my brother-n-law has a medium duty brush cutter he'll let me have(when I finally do get a tractor) but it is the shearpin type...My question is(if it's possible)would it be worth the cost to convert it to the slip clutch type....Or would I be better off to just use it as is until i can by one with the clutch already on it???

Paul you have to consider this--a shear pin requires no maintance a slip cluch does. I have a shear pin on my brush hog and it's great so for the price your going to pay for the unit I would be more than happy. You would be surprized on what it takes to shear the pin.

gordon,I have to admit I can't beat the price and I'll just be cutting pasture mostly any way...The only real problem I would probable have is the ant beds...They must have moved from Texas to beat the heat...I found several with an L3010 GST and 5' brush cutter(with clutch) I rented that actualy stalled the tractor ,course I was in (low)4th gear...aaaand 1' under growth aaand um 6'dead stuff.../w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gifThen I suppose if i mow often enough the ants wont have enough time to build'em that big...

Lil' Paul, I have a shear pin on one implement and a slip clutch on another and have had no problem with either. I personally would not spend any money to convert either way unless I was having problems. I also have a rototiller with neither and I am going to spend money to fix that.

Paul, I have shear pins instead of slip clutches on my tiller, brush hog, and finish mower, and I've never sheared one. When I first bought my place, the fire ant mounds would sure bog down the B7100 and 4' brush hog occasionally, but I don't have that problem anymore. I can certainly understand the need for a slip clutch in certain kinds of terrain, especially rocky ground, but I don't even want a slip clutch for my equipment.

I have a 5ft light duty bush hog and mow pasture. I bought a handful of shear bolts in anticipation and they sit collecting dust. I haven't gone through 1 yet! Unless your getting into some really nasty stuff on a regular basis I'd stick with the shear bolts. Now if you're talking about a post hole digger thats another answer.......

Take the mower and use it for a while. I sheared a couple of shear pins (1/2 in bolts) in 6 years. Also took out a gearbox hitting an old tire. The shear pin won't even know the ant beds are there. If it is a five foot mower, you probably have more power in the blades inertia than you have pulling it so you will probably stall the tractor before you shear a pin. I was using a 40 HP tractor at the time on the mower and looked back and though I just mowed that strip and noticed the blade was not turning but the pto shaft was. Oops... Never heard the mower hit anything that time. Other times I put the blade through 1/4 inch wall pipe without shearing a pin. The mowers are pretty tough and the medium duty mowers are usually rated at 110 HP gear boxes.

But you have to consider what you are gonna be cutting... If mainly high weeds or grass shear pin works great... Anything heavier than that you might want to consider slip clutch.... But make sure you will be cutting heavier material because if you never use the slip it could freeze up and if it freezes up and at some point you need and it does not work you may find yourself in a world of trouble... good and bads to both
