I am looking to buy a tiller for the back of my 2360. The ground I am going to be using this tiller on is fairly rocky but not huge. Only about 20ft wide by about 50long.

What i would like to know is if a slip clutch is better or a shear pin?

Neither is better but the slip clutch may be easier to work with once it's adjusted.:D

Dan,

I won't own another tiller without a slip clutch. Shear pins are fine with implements where you can see and avoid rocks and the like, but with a tiller you can't see or avoid the rocks you're gonna hit. If you're fairly rocky, unless you enjoy changing shear pins (one or two every time you go out) get a clutch for a tiller.

I use a slip clutch on my Yanmar RS1200 rototiller (48" wide).
My Massey Ferguson 124 baler has both a slip clutch and several shear pins, one of which is next to the slip clutch. Don't know if anyone makes a tiller with both.

I don't have a tiller but I'm seriously considering a slip clutch on my 6' shedder. I seem to go though about 2 or 3 everytime I use it. We'll see on the new property if that still holds true.

So the slip clutch has to be adjusted before I use the tiller? Is the adjustment to suit the type of soil? Mine is a combination of sand, rocks and a liitle black topsoil. The neighbor has a large compost heap from his horses.

I'm thinking he may want to get rid of some of it. Use that to till into my soil to improve the quality...

Does it make sense or way off the mark?

it is adjusted so that the cluctch slips before a severe load is placed on the tractor or break the tiller. This should occur in extreamly hard dry land or if a rock hange betweent the tines and the tiller chassis. Lossen untill it slips with the tiller on the ground then tighten back untill it will till good ground and not silp. Run it for about one pass and stop the tiller and feel the clutch. it it is hot and nothing was there to make a hard strain tighten a little more then try agian. A good tiller manufacturer like woods tells you how to measure the screws to set it. make sure that ALL the screws are the same amount of thread exposed. Horse power will govern how tight it needs to be.

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT! every year you need to loosen the clutch and purposly slip it at least once. This will ensure that it is not rusted together and it has good surfaces. Then readjust. A lot of people dont do this part and neglect it. Then when something breaks they think it was the clutches fault when actually it was siezed up

Item No. 65517-OVGA at Harbor freight $60. I just got it mounted on my 5' tiller and haven't tried it yet. It was the cheapest I could find. I was told to run it and loosen nuts till just slips then tighten 1/2 turn and watch for a while that it's not slipping in the normal or average soil you have. I'll have play with it for while to see if I can run it without burning up the friction disc's. bjr

So how wide should the tiller be? The 2360 is about 46" wide. Should the tiller be wider, the same width or narrower than the tractor.

I'm thinking that if the tractor is the same width or wider then i might be able to till between rows if needed?
