Got hooked up with an outfit called 'State Auto' for homeowner's insurance by the agent I use for my auto policies. Company I have the cars with (SafeCo) won't write a homeowner's policy unless the customer has had insurance on it for at last a year, so they had to put me with somebody else for a while. A mere three months in, State Auto is giving me unnecessary headaches, so it's time to shop again.

That led me to wondering about Shelter, so I'm curious if anybody uses them now, or has in the past.

Or maybe there are others? Allstate, AAA and Farm Bureau are out -- will not consider.

USAA and don’t worry again

USAA won't do over 10 acres, but otherwise yes. If you qualify for USAA, you should consider putting your vehicles with them also. They have a dividend return that helps reduce the premium.

USAA qualification - current or prior military service (officer or enlisted) and spouses and their children. There may be a couple more so it's worthwhile to check.

I'm in and I've seen their multitude of insurance quote links, but haven't filled any of them out yet.

If you like the company that your autos are insured through I would suck it up for a year, then put everything through the same company.

USAA was kind of a waste of time, at least for the web quotes. Both auto and home came out considerably higher than my current amounts. I may try to call them next week and see if they can do better.

I've used Shelter for probably 20 years. Before that it was Farm Bureau. I've been pretty happy. A good agent helps. These companies are all in cahoots. I learned from a friend in the business that is becoming more common for them to send out an inspector to make sure you are not at risk. It happened to me. We think that looks unsafe or we think you aren't maintaining your home like we want you too. My inland marine policy for the tractors is great. An umbrella policy for liability was also cheaper than I thought it would be.
