When shifting the gears should you come to a complete stop and select your gear or can you shift on the go. a friend of mine just got his tractor today and was trying to shift it like a truck . is this wrong or right.

If it is like mine, it has a straight cut, non syncromesh gearbox. You must come to a complete stop to shift gears. If you dont, you will hear grinding gears.

The two JM254s I had are the same tractor as your 2425, and my KM454 is of almost identical design. The low range gears in my Yanmar were straight cut too (high range were beveled). None of the four have synchros, and none of the tractors gave me any problems changing forward gears while in motion. I also shift 2wd/4wd on the move, stopping only if I need to change the range select or go into reverse.

Double-clutching between gears might help you learn the technique and timing of shifting "on the fly". After a while it should just become second nature.
