Shoe Laces Size

Learned something today ..thought I'd share.

I bought a cheap pair of shoes at Walmart and within a few months the laces frayed and one broke at work on Friday. So the Mrs. was putting together the shopping list and asked me if I needed anything and I told her about the shoe laces but that I didn't know how long they were. She asked me how many lace holes?

I'm 54 and never knew that shoe lace size was based on the number of lace holes in the shoe. Man do I feel dumb.

Well I'll be 62 tomorrow, and I did know. However, the last pair of laces I bought based on that were still a bit short. I can use them, but there is NO extra lace. For me that may be good because I seem to tie my shoes in such a way that I can almost always find a way to step on a lace. Either that or they get caught in something and come loose, and always when I am right in the middle of trying to carry some big mess of something or other and have no place to set whatever the heck it is down.

In this case it worked out. I'll be laced up and ready to go in the morning.

On a slightly different tack...I don't know why I'm surprised..she does this stuff with me all the time.

Shoelaces, eh? :thumbsup: Have you ever seen Ian's Shoelace Site? It's got more than you ever thought there was to know about shoelaces:

And here's what he has to say about shoelace lengths:

"Shoelaces are often supplied to fit a certain number of eyelets (eg. 6-8). This is a VERY rough way to estimate the required length, as shoes can vary widely. Allowing for the shoe width, or using my approximation formula, gives much better results..."

To keep this a "tractor related topic," maybe we should discuss proper lacing patterns for tractor operation? And different patterns for gear tractors vs. HST? :laughing:

It´s a no brainier, just measure the remaining lace. Come un-done, again a no brainier, tie a double knot.

I don't plan to tie any more shoe laces; too much trouble. A couple of years ago I was having a problem with plantar fasciitis (which I'd never heard of until I had it) and I'd been wearing some pretty cheap sneakers with velcro fasteners. But I went to the Run On Texas store in Coppell to look for some shoes. I think the young man knew what he was doing. He asked me questions and I told him I was looking for comfortable walking shoes, not running. He asked me to take my shoes off and walk across the floor while he watched my feet, then he went in the back and came back with some sneakers for $102.23 including tax. Yep, made in China. I told him I hated to have to tie laces all the time when I'd been accustomed to velcro and he said to use ibungee laces which I'd never heard of. So he got some and put them in the shoes. That was March 25, 2009. After a few days I liked them so well I went back on April 1, 2009, and bought a second identical pair including the 38" ibungee laces so I could swap shoes out each day. I'm still wearing them, both the shoes and the laces still look almost like new even though both pair, including the laces, have been through the washing machine at least twice. I notice the website shows the cord-locks but also shows the laces tied. I have the cord-locks but my laces have never been tied. So I reckon these are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned and the ibungee laces make them very convenient.

Got two pair. The gromit that holds the strap on one shoe broke so I wire tied it. Walmart stopped selling them here though. Probably too many people were buying them. :laughing: They should have raised the price instead. I'd pay $8.79 ...no prob

I got a pair of those clog things for working in the garden. They're pretty good for those muddy days because you can just clean them and your feet with the hose at the same time.

Keegs, thanks for the greeting. I'm waiting for my 91 year old mom to call and sing to me. Tradition.

I need a pair of those garden clogs, and like Bird, I hate laces. Maybe I could send Sharon to Bird's shoe store, a Texas shoe vacation

She has the same foot problems and has been messing around with inserts, foot exercises, icing, etc. Not much is working for her.

Before we got water at the Maine house we bathed in the stream out back. They make great waders. I keep a pair here by the back door for taking out the trash, getting the newspaper, chasing down the dog, getting the mail......surprised how well they hold up for 5 bucks.

Before I bought these good, but expensive, shoes, I tried at least 4 different inserts, eventually threw them all in the trash. The exercises were basically standing back from a table or counter and leaning forward while trying to keep my feet flat on the floor to stretch the bottoms of the feet and the achilles tendon. And the doctor did have me take one Aleve tablet twice a day for awhile.
