I have been following the tread, on shooting benches. What do members use for a back stop. In my case I have 5 highway trailer tires, they are still mounted on rims sitting on a pallet. Also they were free . Mine is wood, wish I had a metal one as it will rot out eventually. I drove a couple of T fence stakes inside to hold them stable. Set my target in front of the tires. I have been using it for five or six years now.
A 22lr bullet will barely stick into the tire. A243 will go through the tire and remain inside it. A 308 using nosler partition bullets will go through the first rim. and stops at the second rim surface . A 12 guage slug will do the same. None of the bullets dinge the second rim surface. If you mutilate the one side you could turn it a bit, to get a different surface. I do a lot of shooting and mine is still good. I could have filled the center with sand, but wanted to be able to move it if necessary . With the fork lift. My land is fairly flat so have no berm or hill to shoot into. This has worked well. old243

I just dug into the side of the mountain a bit with the backhoe (most of the way up and on a nice large flat spot) and used that. Makes a backstop that is about 50 yards high and maybe a ¼ mile deep. The great thing about our state is it is really easy to find a good backstop for shooting - now flat land is a whole different thing......

I have a railroad ties stacked at the base of a steep hill. I'd have to shoot about 45 degrees up to shoot over the hill.
