Looks like you answered your own question better than I could. I have a 12 inch auger and would highly recommend nothing smaller.

As for the bits, I'm in clay, and my stock tip dulls out fairly quickly. I've ground it to a nice edge, and it digs like I'm in soft sand, but only until it's dull again.

I've even welded up some old blades I cut up from my shredder, hoping to get more out of it, but the clay is pretty aggressive. I need to find some qualitiy tips to put on there that wont wear down so fast.

One thing you'll learn is that the tractor just creates MORE hard work for you to do by hand!!! Each post hole you drill has to be cleaned out with a clam shell and if you don't get the hole just right, than you're widening it by hand!!

Oldgoat2: If you have not yet dug a hole with your 12" auger, here's an idea for you. I bought the same setup as you did, and also have the 9" auger. After using the 12" for awhile, I realized it sure would be nice to have about a 14" (instead of the 12"). I found a 14" auger that fits the Speeco gearbox the same as the Speeco auger from TSC, at Northern Tool and Equipment. It was more money than the 12" from TSC, but also built like a tank. Now I can drill a hole and not have to widen it manually if it is off a bit, and setting a 6x6 should give me room to adjust position, and tamp better than the 12" hole did. Sorry this advise may come too late for you. Having the 9" and 14" sizes seems to make the most sense to me. 9" for fencing, 14" for poles and small trees/shrubs...
