I was wondering if the rear PTO shaft on Kubota B and BX ever causes any issues like when running a rotary cutter?

I am looking at tractors and saw this short PTO shaft on a B2620 and I am wondering whether it could be an issue since it is shorter than standard 540 PTO Shafts?

PTO shafts need to be fitted to the implement you are turning with them. I have a little Ford 1100 subcompact and I pull a finish mower that I picked up at auction, and I noticed the other day that it really need to be shortened up, as it is too long for the setup. Too long will put pressure on rear of the tractor and bust the pto housing. Too short will probably cause issues with wobble and increased wear on the parts that slide.

I've got a short one on my B7800 and no probs with a rear mower in 10 years. Not even a hunt of an issue.

I guess that I'm confused by what is meant by "short". Any PTO shaft on any tractor can be either too short, too long on somewhere in between....with a certain amount of tolerance on any given attachment.. "too short" or "too long" is bad. Somewhere "in between" is OK as a rule.:2cents: I suppose "too long" is the worst of all.

I don't believe there is a "standard length" 540 PTO shaft. You buy a shaft too long and shorten it to fit. I believe they recommend at least six inches of overlap between sections but more is better. You should be able to pull it back three to four inched from the PTO on the tractor to allow the sections to move in and out as the implement goes up and down.

I have the impression the OP is asking about the tractor's output shaft, not the shaft between tractor and implement.

If so, no problem with my BX with a couple of shafts.

The PTO output from the tractor is generally short - say in the vicinity of six inches. There is a groove around the circumference of the shaft about halfway in. This groove is used to latch the implement shaft onto the tractor shaft.

Yes I mean the tractor’s rear 540 PTO output shaft.

The one on the B2620 and the BX tractors has less spline length from the retainer grove to the end. I am just wondering if that is a issue, like causing the shaft that connects to it to say wobble.

I don’t know just wondering.

I use a 5' bush hog and a 54" rear snow blower on my B7500. I have not had any issues with the PTO in the 15 years that I have owned it.
