Hi,
I'm using a Yanmar tiller on a Kubota B7800. I feel like it use to till deeper on the old Yanmar tractor and that setup had a much shorter upper link. Is there any reason to think that if I buy a shorter upper link that the tiller will go lower? Don't know the phsyics of it. I know the lower arms are not all the way down on the Kubota. thanks, brett

I think your Kubota may be taller then the Yanmar was.

Anyway, a shorter link would reduce the depth of tilling by limiting the down travel of your lower links.

If there is any adjustment in that top link, lengthen it. The tiller should go lower. If it's still not going as deep as you'd like, you'll need to buy a longer top link.

Is your pto shaft binding? I have to use a pretty short top link to keep the pto shaft angle correct. Also, if you have the rear guage wheels and you're tilting the tiller back b/c of a long top link they would limit your depth. The rear guard could be doing the same thing.

the rear guard is way up and not a factor. The link I have now is a standard size but I have it as short as it will go to keep the tiller from hitting the rear wheels. When I make the like longer, the tiller piviots up towards the tractor and makes contact with the wheels. So shorter may be better. Also, the top link I'm using never have the pressure off it as it does when using a box blade or mower. That is what makes me think I'm not getting all the way down.
thanks, brett w

I ended up shortening an old top link I had to about 8-12" if I remember correctly. The tiller is the only implement that I use it with so it just stays set at what I found worked the best. If your tiller is like mine the top link location on the tiller is forward of the lower links which magnifies the effect of too long a top link. Also, if your tiller is like mine and missing the guage wheels it really won't "float" like a mower or a box blade as it doesn't really have a any structure to prevent it from digging all the way to the shaft. I plan on either making some skids or a guage wheel set up for mine b/c maintaining depth is near impossible when you're always "hanging" on the 3 point. That is unless you want to go full depth all the time. When I'm tilling gardens this isn't a big deal b/c most people like it tilled really deep, but trying to only till a consistant 2"-4" for a lawn is a royal pain. Also check your pto shaft angle if it is angled too much you'll bust the u-joints. With the really short shafts these use it doesn't take a whole lot of misalignment to do this. I have to limit my lift height when running to prevent this.

Generally a shorter upper link raises an implement, longer lowers it.

You seem to be doing the opposite, so you have some sort of non-standard linkage in there somewhere. Does the top link on the tiller stick towards the tractor quite a bit, not flush with the bottom ears?

A pic would help.

I think any replies you get are going to be guess-work at this point, as your equipment is doing things counter to normal.

Paul,

I got a shorter, CAT 0 link, and it pushed the tiller much further away from the wheels, and leveled it pretty well. I can't tell about the depth as it rained today and I can't get out there. I'll post results when it drys out a bit,
thanks, Brett

Hi, using a Yanmar tiller RS1200 with my 2015 Mahindra I noticed that for the PTO shaft to maintain horizontal alignment, stop the drive shaft yokes to bind, and the tiller riding the rear tires when in up position it was nessesary to cut about a 1" from either end from the top ink. Now I have a dedicated toplink /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Used once since the modification and I'm resonably happy with the results. It's not perfect , but something that I can deal with. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bluecheck,
How deep can you till with your setup?
thanks, bw

BrettW ," How deep can you till with your setup?" I allow the shaft that holds all of the tines to go slightly below the surface. If I remember right it can't go much deeper, because the pto shaft would interfere. In inches, (and I'm guessing) it may go down up to 8 inches. Hope this helps.
