Should a JD 50 Series (5075E) start in Neutral when not in Park?

So it doesn't have glow plugs then when the key is pushed in? (I have the full winter package as well.) it says in the manual that there will be a buzzer sound that will continue until the engine is warm enough to crank, I've yet to hear this buzzing and the dealer said there isn't any so how would you know if the pre heat is working?

I'm going to assume that the pre-heat winter package on your M is the same as the one on my M... (however, you know what they say about assuming). Nonetheless, I know the pre-heater is working when the amber neutral light (N) is flashing. When it stops flashing, I engage the starter. Tractor has always started. A couple of times, I've hit the starter too early - before the N stops flashing - and the tractor didn't start. I always wait, now... :)

This is straight out of the owners manual that's why I thought I had glow plugs.

Cold Weather Start Aid

NOTE: Hydraulic and Steering functions may be slow until hydraulic oil warms up to operating temperature. If hydraulic functions operate slowly, warm the transmission-hydraulic system oil. (Refer to “Warm Transmission-Hydraulic System Oil” in Hydraulic System Controls and Operations section.)

Key Switch

A - Key

CAUTION: DO NOT use starting fluid.

Tractors are equipped with glow plugs as a standard equipment starting aid.

To activate cold weather starting device, turn key (A) to RUN position:

NOTE: An audible beep will sound, and will stop beeping when glow plugs are ready. Ambient temperature determines the duration of beeping.

Depress clutch pedal and turn key to START position.

Idle engine until it warms to operating temperature.

NOTE: For temperature ranging 0°C —30°C , run engine between 900 rpm and 1000 rpm.

NOTE: If hydraulic functions operate slowly, warm the transmission-hydraulic system oil. (Refer to “Warm Transmission-Hydraulic System Oil” in Hydraulic System Controls and Operations section.)

I'd guess the owner's manual needs to be updated a bit... No glow plugs. There's a definite "beep" when you turn the key to the "RUN" position - ONE BEEP - that's it! No series of continuous beeps.

Once the engine starts it goes into fast idle - around 1,400rpm - for a variable amount of time: dependent upon the ambient temperature. Engine will stay at high idle for longer periods of time when it's anywhere close to 0 degrees F.

I haven't looked at a service manual, so I can't say for sure, but I believe the manifold heater is a glow plug of sorts. Instead of being in the combustion chamber, it's in the intake manifold. It pre heats the air there instead of in the cylinder. A rose by any other name....
