Looking
Hi All

I've been looking at the Kubota MX5100 as my choice and have been offered a good price...

But then I went into a Kioti Dealer and had a look at a couple of their models and I can virtually get a Cab model, with more HP for the same price.

What am I missing here? It seems Kioti has a fairly good reputation. The downside seems to be ReSale value.

What do you think... is this too good to be true?;)

One of the first things you need to look at is the posts on this site for each brand. See which brand is having more problems.
It was a no brainer for me. I already had my mind made up. I've owned several tractors and operated more than my share.
Resale value is big deal for me also. If the resale value is low, ask yourself. Why?

I agree with this but you also have to understand that some people will just pay more for specific brand names. It's like the difference in buying a shirt in the mall at the GAP or going to JC Penny's... Another reason some brands get better resale is the dealer support network. More dealers = piece of mind, but if you've got a good dealer in your area that isn't going anywhere that's not going to matter.

If you buy the right tractor your dealer should have retired before you want to resell or trade.
Dealer networks cost a lot of money to maintain. Eventually Kioti will catch up.

In the seventies, when Kubota was breaking on the scene, these same questions and concerns were there for them. Will they maintain there value and what about the dealer for repairs.

What do you want to do with the tractor? How long do you expect to keep the tractor (20/30 years is not out of the question)? What is your budget?

Trust your gut.

Both are good tractor manufacturers.

I had the same choice to make back in 2006 except it was Kioti vs. John Deere. We have a Deere dealer only two miles away but what they wanted for the Green was unbelievable compared to the Kioti. Saved lots of money, the Kioti has worked well in the past 6 yrs and I've not looked back.

It it cost you thousands less of up front, stands to reason it will sell for less when sold. Simple math. Has nothing to do with real quality. In the mean time you haven't tied up thousands of dollars that could be making you money, or at least is available for other things. Kiotis are good tractors. Why else would bobcat and McCormick stake their reputations on them (Daedong).

It is simple math, but not the way you put it... It has everything to do with "real" quaility, as well as "perceived" quality. Easy numbers - tractor #1 sells for 20K and 5 years later is worth 15K while a comparable machine, tractor #2 sells for 15K and 5 years later is worth 8K. Which tractor has better resale value?

Do not get me wrong, I am not bashing Kioti or any other machine out there, but please know a little about the manufacturers you are referencing, at least in regards to their reputations... Bobcat was sold several years ago to a South Korean conglomerate and at the time had absolutely no presence in CUTs. McCormick is an old farm name and just that - a name. They were out of business for decades and were re-introduced when another tractor company had to divest itself of a manufacturing plant due to EU rules. They had a brand new plant opening and they sold off an old plant in England which became the "new" McCormick. At that time they manufactured old design machines and have only recently become involved with CUTs. Exactly what reputations are they staking their association with Daedong on?

I think with your numbers, you'd come out even. TVM of $5k has got to be around $7k in 5 years...
I think for "hobby" tractors MX5100/DK40 sized and down, the resale values aren't that far off in Canada atleast. I found no DK40/45/50 for even 25% off new of any age or hours. Used Kubota's were also more expensive but they were more to begin with and I've bought used things before blinded by "reputation" and its cost me.
If you get into "real farmer" tractors then they don't care as much about saving $5k on a $40+k purchase and the more established brands hold values better than the new guys.
I'm a hobby user and the premium to get into a similarly capable Kubota, wasn't in the budget for us.

Every time I look at pre owned Kioti tractors on the dealers lots, or on tractorhouse, Etc. I think the prices usually seem high compaired to what they sold for new.
I'm not convinced that the resale value is lower.

Have to agree, I don't think you take a hit with the resale value of Kioti over any other brand. In general used prices from any manufacturer floor me. I took a chance on a 20yr old JD with 1800 hrs on it for my first tractor, but only kept if for a year because of the breakdowns and constant tinkering. Anything newer was priced to close to new, so I took the warranty and am enjoying a brand new tractor.

Do you change tractors every couple of years? I'm guessing the scrap value of the steel in my tractor will be worth more than what I paid for it by the time I want to sell it.

If you compare the reg L line from Kubota to the CK line from Kioti, the Kioti is bigger, stronger, heavier has more features and is slightly better priced. You will be able to get a higher powered L line tractor, in which case you need to compare to the DK line. If you look at the Grand L line, the Kubota is WAY more expensive than the DK line from Kioti, but has some options like HST+ that Kioti doesn't. If that's what you're looking for, it's an easy choice, otherwise, the DK line will again be bigger, stronger and heavier and will have far more standard features for way less money. If I ever win the lottery, I'd go shopping for a Grand L, all decked out with HST+ and all the trimmings in the mid 40 hp range, until then, I can't justify paying a lot more for less, IMHO.
