I would consider the fuel pump noise to be normal, most mechanical fuel pumps are driven off of a cam lobe. The Honda engine I am using on my Cub has a Mikuni mechanical pump on the left side of the engine, and when the engine is at idle I can hear a little noise from it, or should I say the normal noise of it doing its thing. Most Kohler Command twins I have heard are actually quieter than the Honda. -Fordlords-

I don't thing that the pump itself makes any noise. It's that fact that the lifter has to not only operate the push rod, spring and valve, but with the pump on top of the valve cover it also has to operate that as well and I think causing the lifter to lose prime at idle.

I agree that the pump should be run either off of the crank, or cam and not off the valve train

That does sound sort of silly running the fuel pump the way they do. But I doubt it could bleed down the lifter at idle, as the small engine fuel pumps can be actuated with just finger pressure. The mechanical actuation of the fuel pump is likely what you are hearing though. -Fordlords-

The majority of the lifter noise issues I have seen on Kohler Commands have been on vertical shaft engines. I have seen a few on horizontal's but not many. It may have something to do with the position of the lifter as it is more horizontal in the vertical shaft .???? I know Kohler has changed the oil bleed holes in the lifters, oil flow through the heads, oil etc...It is still sporadic though as not all engines do it.

Depending on type of plastic used on hood -; drilling a hole will not stop crack in many plastics. This worked in fiberglass applications and I think some PVC applications but the new ABS 's will continue to crack.

Make a note of hours on machine; have dealer make a note on hours and date of replacement; you may need to replace it again unless they have modified the panel. Modifacations can be remolds or different formulations of the plastic.
