We've had our first taste of true Indiana summer here this weekend with temps going over 90 and high humidity. (We didn't go over the 90 mark all last summer). This combination is good for corn and tomato crops...but hard on the cold weather crops. They say on an Indiana summer night you can hear the corn growing. It was a hard struggle, but I think I won out over the weeds this weekend.

I have been working hard to improve the soil in my hill garden spot the past 4-5 yrs. It is now time for a midterm report card. I was out and snapped these pictures this morning. Hoping to see what the rest of you are doing out there...so post your garden pictures. Let's see what is growing around the country.

Beautiful garden! Your soil looks so rich. I'd post pictures, but I haven't a digital. Have to take pictures, develop, scan, just too many steps. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

HRS, the ground on these hills around here is clay over sub layers of brown sandstone , so the clay is a brownish / yellow color. I have been tilling in large amounts of leaves and also have put a lot of Ag lime on it. Our PH usually runs around 6.5 on some of these hills. You can put 4-5 tons of lime per acre without even testing and know you are in the ballpark. Also this year, I brought in 2 tri-axle loads of 3 yr old cow manure from a dairy farm for this garden spot (I have a second garden in a back field for larger crops like corn, etc ). There was a lot of sand mixed with the manure, so the combination of both was very helpful, and why the soil looks dark in the picture. Also brought in a lot of weed seed too....thus the reason I am wore out today.

sassafraspete,
Beautiful garden! It reminds me of my grandmother's garden back in the 1960's in Posey Co. IN. It sure is pretty down in Brown Co. this is the first year that we haven't spent Memorial Day weekend in Nashville, IN. Keep up the nice work.

sassafras,

There could be a new business opportunity removing the undesirable greens.

Beautiful garden. You're way ahead of me(Lower MI). Wow, we had the 95 degree weather over the weekend......but then 60 mile an hour winds/storm yesterday evening. Sticks/branches are down everywhere.

Looks nice. Our garden up north here has already finished its radishes. Onions are tasty and we had our first spinach salad Saturday. Beets, carrots and peas are doing nicely. Tomatoes are starting to flower as are the bell and hot peppers. Rasperries will ripen in a couple weeks as will the strawberries. Grapes look nice on the vine that survived the late freeze. Cukes, watermelon, cantelop and pumkins went in last week. Cutworms followed(I hate those things). The robbins ate the cherries, so I bet they were good /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Lots of fruit on the apples and stone fruits. We even have some flowers on our kiwi vines this year. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Pics to follow when I get my camera back from the kids. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It was 94 yeasterday afternoon until the thunderstorms came through. We were driving home and the temp dropped 10 degrees in a mile. Lots of rain. We really need it as we are in a drought. The lawn is dead except where I water it directly in front of the front door or where there is shade.
