I have a question about my conversion of a chipper similiar to this one

I have converted it to mount on a trailer and what Im doing is to add a 7 inch hose to the inlet to be attached to a ride on outlet (mower).
Ive done some testing with good results.I removed the round inlet on the chipper and made a flange to hold the hose with for the inlet.
I notice, that on the original there was a plate inbetween. it reduced the opening from round to half moon.
:thumbsup:There lies my question. Is the plate there to increase the suction? or just to hold material there for further mulching?In my plans I could remove it easily.
