Tractor
Massey Ferguson 40E
I am retiring from the military and recently bought a tractor for my property. I bought a shuttle drive 40E. I don't know how to drive it. I ordered a manual and it will be here in 2 weeks shipping. Can anyone explain how to shift or put in gear easily? I can move bucket and feels like it wants to move but unsure.

This is my first tractor. Really I am not dumb. Just want to maintain small road, move rocks, level property, etc.

thanks

Rob

Is this the one with the 2 shuttle pedals by your right foot and brakes on the left, or is it clutch by the left foot and shuttle by steering wheel? (Used to have a 40b)

It has brake on left and right pedals are forward and back.

I got it in gear, has a gear shift of some type right between legs. I don't know high or low but I had to really push the brake hard to get it to change gears.

Thanks for your help

Not familiar with that model, but two pedals would usually indicate a hydrostatic drive (in my experience, anyway), and the "gear lever" is usually for selecting a range, not a gear, and it should only be moved when the tractor is stationary. Once in a particular range, you just use the pedals to drive.
Good luck - new things are always both interesting to get to know, and pose some challenges in mastering them :)

Not hydrostatic at all. It's called a power shuttle and is a torque converter drive. The pedals are fwd and rev. That's the one we had. It's great for loader work. More you push, more throttle you get. Simple - right pedal fwd, left pedal rev. Come to a stop with brake to switch directions. It'll coast if you get it going and let off pedal, just like a car. If it feels like it wants to move and wont, give it more pedal or shift to a lower gear.

Moving the shift levers is hard. You must be stopped. Pushing brake harder shouldn't matter. Taller lever on left is the gear (1&2 for low range, 3&4 for high). The shorter lever on the right is the range (low is fwd, high is back).

I'm thinking waayyy back - it's been 30 years, but I believe the gear is a straight shift from 1 to 2 (or 3 to 4) with no neutral position. I believe the range lever has the neutral. If hard to shift, ease off brake to let it roll a little while trying to shift and it should go in. Dont be shy trying to move the levers.

Great tractor and Perkins engine is bulletproof. Had several through the years. Used mainly for daily scraping of manure in the barns and feedlots and loading manure spreaders on a dairy farm.

Mybe engine revs set to high for idle .....idle should be +-650rpm

Ours idled so low you almost thought it was too low. It's actually just the shift levers that move tight. Very short throw on the range. It was a 2 hand deal, I remember that.
