Sorry to ask a stupid question, but my manual states to lower tractor rpm's to about idle before shifting shuttle. I am using my bushhog (running over 2600 rpm) - do I have to shut down to idle to reverse? I run my Ford 3000 diesel at 1800 to get the 540 PTO and I have always just shoved in reverse and kept mowing. Thanks in advance.

Mine a HST so maybe I'm way off base, but what would the point be in a shuttle if you had to idle it every time? I know my range selection change is supposed to be at idle too, but when operating the BH I sometimes reach around and pop it in neutral at about 2000 RPM to let the machine drift and reposition with the BH. It's actually one of the things I didn't like about HST until I figured it out. I've never had any problem doing that and frankly it changes ranges easier at that RPM than at idle. Go figure. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Great machine though. I finally figured out what it will do with a BH and loaded tires for rear ballast. Using the FEL it snaps 14" wild cherrys of at the base without the stump ever moving. Amazing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Now it's a low range tractor in this configuration (weight) except for reasonably level ground but it's impressive for traction and grunt power. Most 50HP tractors wouldn't have done much better at that task. It suprised me. I was running at 1500 RPM and toying around. Never thought it had a chance at that tree unless a root or two left go. It also cuts up ground (digs) well with the toothbar equipped FEL even in 2WD. More I do, more I like this over ballasted configuration. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif In 4WD it just wants to break something and I don't think it cares what, so I'm going to have to use some sense with that.

Where's Ramon now?

I think they are trying to say don't put high loads on the shuttle clutch, ie don't be charging along at pto rpm in a middle gear and grab reverse.

Besides you hitting the steering wheel it is had on the tractor!

I think most shuttles can take high rpm direction changes as long as you're not speeding along. If using the foot pedal accelerator, just let off while shifting, the bushhog shouldn't be too hard to bring up to speed.

If I'm mowing open areas on my shuttle I set the hand throttle sit back and mow.
In tighter areas where I need to slow down/speed up, or areas where I need to change dirrections I just use the foot throttle. If I go from foward to reverse simply let up on the foot throttle flip the shuttle and head the other dirrection.

pvm171:

I have a 3pt-mounted finish mower for my L3130 GST and run wide-open when I use it, and I don't have any problems reversing at high idle. I downshift to slow down for corners or to change direction, but that's about it. My primary concern is the momentum feedback I can send back through the transmission during the direction change.

My personal opinion regarding the comment in the manual is that it's safer from Kubota's perspective to instruct the user to baby the tractor and then over-build the product anyway.
