I have quite a bit of hours on air cooled Kohler Commands ..about 14000 hrs on 4 different engines,3 of which are still in service. ..they all powered Steiner 420s and Dixie Chopper zero turns...I can tell you that running full synthetic in all of them and the steiners being run full bore driving a 72 inch deck, pulling 3 mowers behind it,they never get a break, for 12 yrs I mowed our golf course rough with that setup and always ran Schaeffers x7000/x9000,Mobil 1 or Napa full synthetic in them...always changed it at 75-100 he intervals or whenever it got really dark which ever came first...the Kohler on a 90 plus day running from 6am-4 pm..you'd see close to 300 degrees oil Temps and the oil never broke down..the only Ill effects I had were that after 9-10 years and about 4000hrs,they would be using a quart of oil in about 25hrs...you wouldn't smell it,or see it but it burned it,upon disassembly we found that the heat simply took the tension out of the piston rings..they were just there no tension left in them, they were still within specs ,our cylinders were at then .004 out which is the limit,so I did bore. 025 over, but one of the 22hp commands we simply put new rings in and broke the glaze and it was perfect ran another thousand plus hours with normal oil usage...my engines ran on 95 percent Schaeffers oil.
