I have a Cross triple spool valves operating top link, side link and hydraulic scarfiers. The triple spool is supplied by 1/2 inch line. I can deal with the top link operating fast but really need the side link to go slower. I have restricted both lines to the side link cylinder to 1/4 inch and that did not seem to help at all. Would an adjustable flow control valve installed on the supply line at the Cross valve correct this problem? Thanks for any advice.

Yes, a flow controll will work but will cost $ and add more leak points and stuff to get torn off.
I'de just replace the fittings going into the cylinders with a restrictor orifice of some kind. Maybe a piece of steel rod inserted into the base of the fitting and then braze it in and drill a 1/8" hole in it. I bet a hydraulic shop might have a fitting already in stock or could sure make one.

Thanks Shaley for the reply.

Is this a common problem? I will try "the reduce to 1/8 inch". I was surprized to find very little diff. when I reduced from 1/2 to 1/4 inch. Thanks again.

Try TSC or hydraulic fitting store. They have hydraulic fitting with restrictors in 1/2 and 3/8" sizes. They are pretty cheap ($4-5) and the orifice is about 1/16th inch or smaller. Can drill it slightly bigger if need more flow.

And I'm fairly sure that it is a floating plate, so it only restricts in one direction, provides ALMOST restriction free flow in the other direction. So just be sure you know where you want it and which way around.

The fitting appears to restrict flow in both directions. It is very simple with only a tiny orifice. Looks just like a typical pipe thread fitting. I will get more info.

I know what to look for now. Are brass fittings strong enough for this application?

No, brass and cast iron fittings are NOT OK with 2500 PSI.

Problem Solved. Thanks for the ideas and information. I live in the middle of nowhere. My zip code is E I E I O. There is no hydraulic shops any where close by.

I took a couple of finder washers that had a 1/8 inch hole in them and ground them down to where they would fit inside the male end on my quick disconnects, then reattached the lines. Now the cylinders operate at a more controlled rate. Thanks for the ideas.
