I have a 7 ft. rear finish mower rear discharge mower for my tractor. I’m really happy with that, as it doesn’t matter if I’m cutting on the left or right side. It distributes the clippings fairly well without rafting. I also have a JD 445 with a 60” mulching deck and a JD 445 with a hydraulic tilt dump material collection system.

I’ve considered buying a zero turn. I mow around farm paths, barns, and shooting range with the tractor. The 445 with the mcs is great in the fall for getting up leaves, but it’s clumbersome and requires frequent maintained to keep it in tip top shape. The 445 with mulching deck is much more nimble and I don’t have to be concerned about which side I’m mowing next to.

With the mulching deck everything is fine except in heavy grass it tends to leave a windrow on the left side. The mcs leaves a beautiful cut, nice and neat, but it’s much slower and more trouble to deal with. The 445’s mow about 5 or 6 acres a week.

The question is, what is your favorite grass cutting implement for the yard and why? I’m thinking a zero turn with rear discharge and a detachable rear bagger-hopper arrangement would be perfect. A leaf vac arrangement seems unwieldy and too much to drag around. One yard is free of most obstacles and another yard has bushes and trees everywhere.
