Does anyone know of any plans I can look at that would give me an idea as to how I can make a sifter? Sounds silly I know, but I have lots of mulch that I can make but it does contain small rocks and twigs. There is no short of supply where I am at. I can make as much as I want, and getting rid of the "makings" is cost prohibitive here. At $.12 a pound at the local disposal site I would be broke within a week! I feel I could use a small gas engine tied to a frame that would be vibrated to drop the "Mulch" out the bottom thru a 1/4 screen. I then could remove the leftovers by way of my tractor or dumping them to the side. I would just haul the "leftovers" away. I am thinking of mounting a rod to a small sprocket off the engine(idling) to a larger sprocket on the frame to slow the shaking down. If need be to speed the process up I can always speed the engine by way of a throttle. Any ideas?? Hope I am in the correct discussion group!

Around here gravel pit operators build them on a 45 drg angle. The good stuff falls thru the grate and bad rolls off.

Im building one out of a puckup truck trailer frame. I have an axle tube and shaft with a hub mounted to a tire that my pto spins. then a grate that sits on an anglethe grate is an old rock crusher gravel screen. Its hinged at the bottoem and the top will have a smalle roller wheel at the top with a flat welded to it to make it bounce the smaller version of this I mae works pretty good. Ive found that if you push the twigs back up into a pile they make good compost after a little while. THis thing shakes like heck. We have 4 tractors here as well as excavator and a standard tlb so the tractor powerion it isnt hindered by tying up a loader. You also could use a geard motor, or a tiller used as a powerunit.

I have been thinking of building a vibrating sifter for a while now and have come up with the following.

I would suspend the slanted screen and frame assembly from a wood or metal rack using chains in the 4 corners.
This would allow for slant adjustements depending on the type of material to be sifted as well as vibration movement.

For vibration I would use a small 4-stroke briggs or whatever that would drive a shaker.

My shaker would consist of 2 1" pillow bearings and the shaft would have a chunk of metal welded offset in the area between the bearings.
The shaft would be coupled to the engine by chain drive, belt or lovejoy style coupler.
When that small 4stroke revs up the chunk of metal welded to the HD shaft would vibrate like the dickens thus shaking the whole screen.
Vibration would be easy to change by welding more offset mass.

I'd use 1" to have HD bearings for the punishment.
Probably 5HP would do the trick.
Motor would want to be shock mounted (lord type mounts?)
Possibly a short coupling shaft with perhaps a u-joint to compensate for shock mounted motor movement will be needed.

Depending on terrain, the rig might even be chain slung from 4 conveniently located trees rather than a frame.

Just some of my thoughts!
