Silencing the RFM

My rear finish mower is very quiet except for the slapping and clanging of the wheel stems topping and bottoming out in their extension arm. So I took some coil springs and machine washers to take out the slack in the shim stack. Wheels still turn very freely and move like they are supposed to but now its very quiet and with the pressure the lynch pins no longer want to roll sideways which make it easy for them to come out.

I guess the question that begs asking is - why was there any slack in the first place? Sounds more like you lost some spacers. The RFMs I've used have all had a full stack of spacers on each vertical leg, leaving no room for springs and washers. Typically, you should have gotten four spacers for each leg, one each of four different heights. I see only two in your photos.

When purchased new it only had three and to make the coil spring work with out cutting it down shorter I took off one of the shims but I think that it comes with just three and not being all the same size you can adjust your cutting hieght that way. I just looked at KK online and it only has three but I still had about an inch of slack with all in place.

My previous rear finish mower was a King Kutter. It never had any gap (full to the top with spacers).

The Frontier (and I assume the Woods, since Woods makes the Frontier) comes with springs. Four spacers and a spring on each wheel.

I use a KK RFM myself and there is slack in the spacer stack. Don't notice it over the 40D and the tunes playing on the headphones so it won't get changed anytime soon on my account.
