I recently was given - yes given - one of these spreaders. As with most free things, I have spent way more time and effort getting it running than a new one probably would have cost. No money, just my time and aggravation. This is an older model, I think, that has two holes on the bottom of the cone where the material drops onto the spreading plate. One is center facing forward while the other is on the left side as you face the tractor from the rear. Somehow, the combination of these two holes is how one selects the direction of spreading. I had to redesign and build the drop mechanism. I made the decision to eliminate the hole on the side and keep the hole that is centered, facing forward.
Now my question - when the material drops to the spreader plate it seems to spread heavier the left. I would prefer it to be more even or centered. I am looking for ideas on how to accomplish that.
Here is what I tried so far - The "fins" are adjustable so I changed their angle from 90 degrees to an angle that slopes away from the direction of spin. This improved the spread pattern somewhat letting more material spread towards center. I changed the speed of the PTO but that didn't seem to have much change at all.
FYI - The "fins" of the spreader plate are fairly long (probably 10" but I'm not home to measure them) and extend beyond the plate itself. They are also curved (sort of "cupped"). Would any combination of shortening them or straitening them (no "cup") get me the desired result of centering the spread pattern? They are easily removable and I have plenty of material to make new ones but I'd like some advice before I jump into it again.

Thanks in advance.
