My father in law and I are trying to help out an older gentleman at church with his tractor. It's a Fordson Major and the trouble seems to be in the fuel delivery system but it might be better to explain the symptoms and then hear what you guys might think we need to check.

After the engine starts it revs to high RPM and will not idle down. We've replaced the governor diaphragm but it still seems like the governor is not working properly but then again, we are not Major experts, pun intended. :D

Do you have any suggestions on what we need to be looking for?

Thanks,

Jeff

Is there oil in the pump ? Is the rack free ? Or binding ?

Yes, there is oil in the pump now. Before we started working on it there was no oil in the pump and was "sticking." Everything seems to be free now.

Why do I remember something about a tube running from the pump to the intake manifold and the throttle link attaches to a butterfly in the intakemanifold ?
Check tube and butterfly !

Great memory. :D Yes there is a tube to the intake and it seems that is what is supposed to actuate the diaphragm. Weird concept to me since I always thought diesels have no vacuum. Anyway, we've checked that too and everything seems to be functioning properly in that regard. We've cleaned the air filter connected to the diaphragm too. Maybe we need to stand on one foot and hold a finger in our ear while cranking the engine? :D

DLTTrekkers,

Thank you for your help! We got it running good again. Turned out we weren't thorough enough in cleaning those small tubes going to the butterfly. The owner is tickled to have his Major back in business.

Thanks again!!

Jeff
