I just brought home a friend of mines Ford 4500 TLB. 3 cyl. diesel . there are no lights on this thing . just a battery (BIG!) and a starter with 4 terminals and a new generator. it appears it is positive ground?????

The wiring is a jumbled mess and i want to start over.

I want a simplified wiring schematic.

there is a small wire coming off the satarter terminal that is closest to the engine block., when i touch that to the big terminal on the starter it will start so whatever the two other terminals are ??? they appear to be factory jumpered to each other.

The new generator just has two terminals, but there is a harness leading to it that has 5 wires coming out of it ??? I dont even know where the other end of that 5 wire harness goes yet because i cant get that side of the hood off due to a butchered on muffler.

I already bought a new ignition
He just wants to be able to start & stop it with a key. I see the shut off is actually mechanical though.

It was negative ground from factory. It is easy to change back to negative ground, but there should be a reason to why it is changed, so better check what is installed first. The starter works the same way in both cases.
4500 is basically a 4000 with implements, here is a wiring diagram: The Fordson Tractor Pages Forum • View topic - 1000 Series wiring diagram

I am not sure about the starter terminals but I guess you mean the terminals that connect the solenoid to the starter motor. The small wire controls the solenoid, when you touch the "big terminal" (which is connected to battery live) the solenoid push the starter drive gear in position against the engine flywheel gear ring and connects the "big terminal" to the starter motor. The engine then cranks.

I am not sure about the harness at the generator, perhaps it is wires for oil pressure sender, water temperature sender and such.

Hope some of it helped...

yes that will help some as i understand wiring harness schematics, but i guess the generator or regulator will now be polarized from being run the wrong way??
Iguess it's not getting a charge because The battery reads the same 12.3 volts running or not.

I powerwashed everything so now i can see colors and touch things w/o getting greased from head to toe. this old beast was nasty.

thanx , crossy

If you have the original type (Lucas) of generator/regulator setup, this may help to polarize the generator and check/adjust the regulator, it is in english: Laddningsregulator

Q.) Why do the British drink warm beer?

A.) Because Lucas makes refrigerators.

OMG, I just found this:

It's not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohms Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.

well i got it to charge now and the battery is hooked up with NEGATIVE ground. I'm just going to wire a push button start and momentary contact switch for the intake heater(glow plug). thats what i think the extra Ford type solenoid is mounted there for. thanx , crossy

jumper bat hot to field on the genny to polarize ... I'd disconnect the field tab at the genny when doing this..
