Ford 1910
Greetings—

I’m planning to do some keyline plowing/subsoiling on a field on my acreage in Maine.

Yeomans Keyline Plows are too expensive, and I’ve only got a 32 HP tractor, so I’m only going to be able to pull a single shank.

So, I’m looking for a single-shank subsoiler suitable for a Ford 1910.

The ~$300 TSC model would probably work fine and it’s likely I’ll purchase one as I need to start this year and those seem available.

But I’d prefer something that has a colter wheel and otherwise more closely mimics a Yeomans plow.

The attached picture from Ben Law’s excellent book “Woodlander” (U.K.) looks just about perfect.

But… I don’t see anything like it for sale.

Any ideas for ordering one, good implement dealers to talk to, or how to add a colter to a single shank version?

Thank you!

Pretty light tractor for pulling even a single-shank subsoiler through fairly dry soil.

Is your Ford 2-WD or 4-WD? Are the rear tires inflated with air or liquid filled?

TSC Subsoilers do not have shear-bolt protection. If you hit an underground obstruction there is the possibility of your tractor tipping over backwards. ((Ask me how I know.))

As an alternative, if your Maine soil is not too stoney, consider an All Purpose Plow, which are generally available at farm auctions pretty cheap. Your tractor should be able to pull a four shank or three shank All Purpose Plow.

Your coulter blade idea is a good one. I have a subsoiler just like the one you are considering. It does the job, up to a point, I sink it to maximum depth to sever invading roots from sequoia trees bordering crop land, any roots over 2 1/2 inches will stop my 33 hp tractor in it’s place. I have never had the front end come up, though I don’t dispute that can happen.
The weakness of it, is that it tears the heck out of the turf, and makes a big mess of decent looking grass, which has to be addressed afterwards.

you might think about getting a used coulter assembly and fabricating
it to fit the subsoiler, or having a shop do it.

Hi, it’s 4wd with filled tires and an FEL on the front, I’ll be working in gravelly loam and Sandy loam with some rocks and mostly away from treeline. Won’t buy anything without shear pins, need a subsoiler to keyline the field. Thank you!

Thank you—may ask my neighboring mechanic to fab a used assembly on. Great to know what to expect Re. roots
