Just getting wood/coal furnace ready for the heating season, cleaning chimney, etc. I was wondering if anyone knows what the life expectancy of the single walled pipe is? I take it apart every year and clean it. Looks okay, no rust, pitting etc.

You can barely see in the pic, but it runs directly out of the furnace and though the thimble in the wall out into the chimney flue.

My dad replaces his rusted out version just about ever 2 years on his small garage stove. I have heavyer wall version on mine and no bends and mine looks as good as it did the day i installed it 7 years later.

My uncle has a short run comming from his vermont casting stove to the brick chimney that i dont think has been replaced in 20 years yet he heats with wood and cleans it twice a winter.

If you have the black pipe it should last a few years as long as it is indoors. I just replaced mine last night also. I had it for 5 years and it was time for some new stuff.

Afternoon MegaMe,
Im kind of on the same page as Scesnick, I would think that 5 to 7 years is as much as Im going to get out of a good grade of single wall pipe ! I have a short run to my thimble, one 90 coming out the back side of stove, a 2 ft length, another 90 and one more 2 ft length to the thimble. I clean it out every fall before using it. Come to think of it I may start it tonight, it got cold last night and Kathleen was complaining about cold feet this morning ! :( ;)

I have a good grade single 8" wall pipe that runs straight up through my roof. I clean it two to three times a year and it is at least 25 years old. It still seems pretty solid. I have seen some stove pipes that you could see the flames through  and the home owners still felt comfortable about their stoves and stovepipes. Their homes have not yet burned down . I am more concerned about my double wall insulated stovepipe that my single wall pipe runs into because I can not determine its integrity. I will probably replace my single wall stove pipe if/when I replace my three legged stove .

I have a wood stove in my living room installed 22 years ago. Still has the original heavy gauge stovepipe. Burn 3 cord a year thru it. MikeD74T
