Tractor Sizing six foot bushog for an L3800

/ six foot bushog for an L3800 #21
I just bought a L3800 and was wondering about Bushhog size also. I was going to use an old Woods 6 foot pull behind type, not 3 point hitch. have about 50 acres of rolling pasture.
Any advantage or disadvantage to this type of mower?

We use 3-point as well as one Woods DS1260 pull type. We like the pull type as it is more stable on slopes and gives a more even cut on uneven ground.

It is not as maneuverable as a 3-point especially when backing.

It is very good for trimming down inclines such as to the edge of a pond.

The height, as ours is hydraulically operated is not as precise/repeatable as with the position control 3-point.

The pull type is much easier to hook up.

That is all I can think of off hand.

One other consideration with a bushhog size is if you need to get into tight places with it. I have an L3830 with a 5ft landpride rotary cutter and I need to squeeze into several places between trees and fencing. A 6 foot would be not only wider but also longer making it harder to get into tight spots. The 5 foot takes longer mowing my 11 acres of pasture, but on a nice day who cares.

Advantages of a pull type are ease of hook-up and the 3PH doesnt haveto carry the weight. So they are a little more stable on hills.

Disadvantages are they cannot be raise for transport like across obsticals or ditches. They also cant be raise as quick and easy uncase you run over something you shouldnt have. And they are more difficult to back up into tight areas.

I have a 3PH type. A technique I use on rosebushes/briars is to raise the cutter all the way, back over top, and lower onto bush. You wouldnt be able to do this with a pull type.

I also clear around the ditch with mine by backing up and letting the cutter hang over the ditch/slope. You also couldnt do this with a pull type.

The newer pull types with hydraulic lift are not quite as bad as the old ones as I can raise ours as quick with the hydraulic lift as with a 3-point, but good points and why we have both types.

Yea, that reminds me of one other point, the pull type with hydraulic lift requires the rear remotes.
