I recently bought a L 3901 Kubota and was wanting to get a box scrape for it. Some of these implement dealers says 5' some say 6' and Dirt dog make a 5.5'. The outside of the rear tires measures 5' 1".

I have the same tractor and I'm either going to build one or buy one next spring, so I want to follow the replies on your thread. Very happy with my tractor so far!

I like to see 3 to 6 inches beyond the tire on each side. It's no fun trying to widen a cut and the only way is to get down and readjust the hitch sway chains to offset the scraper to one side.

This is what I consider the perfect bob blade for your tractor. Bush Hog has some also. Just not quite as heavy.

These ROBB (roll over box blade) work very well and are about the next best units there are next the industrial grade box blades with the hydraulic actuated rippers which are the units that have replaced the ROBB as the commercially used box blades.

I happen to have Gannon units which sadly are no longer built. :( But these units are fairly tough and have held up well for me. I have a 65" unit and an 81" unit that I run behind my 5000lb 32hp & 12,000lb 75hp tractors.

Just remember, you typically get what you pay for when purchasing new implements. ;)

I have a L3200, so the same weight & traction (I have loaded R4s). HP isn't terribly relevant. I have a 6' King Kutter box for mine to cover my 5' of tracks. Fully loaded with dirt spilling towards my tires I run out of traction. The KK isn't a heavy implement compared to better boxes & it would be nice to have one that cuts better, but it hasnt let me down. I've moved a couple dump trucks worth of dirt with mine unburrying the back of my barn. Lots of driveway smoothing & a serious re-grading of my driveway. Moved a couple dump trucks of old packed gravel & the dirt under neath to get my driveway to drain properly.

If I found a great CL or auction deal on a heavier 66" I'd be all over it & sell off my current one. Picked up a 66” hinge back off CL for a friend with the same tractor. Apparently its working well, but not sure how well & she has never used a box blade before. Thought about keeping it & selling her mine.

TnT is over $1k if you need the hydraulics, but is SO worth it. Makes running the box twice as easy & a lot more effective.

I have a 2015 kubota L3901 with a landpride bb1566 box blade and many times I wish I had a wider box blade but realistically I've already gotten bogged down with the 66 inch box in certain conditions. I have loaded R1 ag tires to get the maximum traction as well. A 5ft box is the least I would consider getting and only if you don't plan of ever setting the wheels out wider. I'd like to be to have a 7ft box blade for snow removal but for dirt work and grading a 66 or 72 inch box blade is more than adequate for this size tractor.

I have a 5' box on my L3200, same size as the newer 3301/3901 models. Extends past the R4 tire tread a 3-4 inches on each side. Has been perfect. When it fills up with heavy clay soil, it will either strain the engine or lose traction, so a bigger box would be worse in those cases.

A 3901 has more power and could certainly pull a 6' box better, but you will still probably run out of traction when the box fills up.

I suppose the real question is what do you plan to do with the box blade? What type of soil are you dealing with? If grading a gravel driveway, a 6' would be fine. If you plan to be digging deep into dirt and filing the box with material, I think a 6' could be borderline too much. Especially if the soil is heavy.

Huh? Its 60" from the outside of one of my tires to the outside of the other. I have R4s, which can't be offset on the Economy Kubota unless you put in wheel spacers. I don't see how you can have any overhang on a 5' box blade on your tractor. Last I checked 5' = 60" & a 5' box blade should be pretty much the same width as your tractor's track.

Unless you are running R1s, which can be offset a bit, even on the economy Kubotas.

I have a Bush Hog ROBB - RO720. Its 72" wide and my tractor rear tire width is 80". I've found no difficulties ripping a path wider than the 72" width by making a second pass along side the first. If its rough going I make a pass with the ripper shanks first.

Honestly, if I'm clearing and leveling an area I only look to the ROBB to make the initial clearing and rough grading/leveling of the area. I also have a Land Pride GS2584(land plane grading scraper) that does the final grading, leveling and smoothing.

The trick to using the ROBB in clearing & leveling a large area is - make the first pass, make the second pass along side the first but about 60" offset, make the third pass and take out the 60" left between the first & second pass. Using this technique I have successfully cleared & rough leveled an area 80' x 170'. Using the LPGS this area is flat, level and smooth as the top of a pool table.

My 5' box blade measures 62" (similarly, previous tractor's 4' box measured 50"), but that wasn't what I was referring to. While my box is just barely wider than the outside of the tires to the sidewalls, it covers the tread/tracks with several inches to spare on each side. That's the important measurement when doing grading/smoothing and some other types of ground engaging work. You definitely want to cover your tracks as a bare minimum. Being wider than the sidewalls is good if you want to dig down with the box, but I'd say the box should be much wider, not just a couple inches.
