Been wanting a mower/brush cutter for my skid steer for a long time just don’t want to give 5k for one. Thinking I’ll convert an old 3 point 5 or 6’ cutter into one like I’ve seen on other build threads. Are any of the older cutters extremely tough or tougher than the rest? I know I won’t be cutting up 6” trees with one but would prefer not to be breaking stuff when hitting 2” saplings

I don’t know which brand to recommend but I can tell you the skid steer brush cutters are way different than a standard three point cutter. The blade carrier on mine is 1” thick and weighs 500 lbs.

Which brand do you have?

Blue Diamond. I think it is the extreme or severe duty one I get their nomenclature mixed up. I have been really happy with it.

I’m just not sure how much you would save if you bought a good heavy three point cutter, a good hydraulic motor, hoses, quick attach plate, etc. Granted It is a little bigger but I sold a seven year old 10’ three point bush hog last week for 4K.

most of the heavier 6' I've been looking at have been around 5-700. 300 approx for the motor. I have enough steel laying around to build my qa plate and anything else. Hoses I make so possibly a little in fittings if I don't have what I need. I want an MTL but for the time being I don't see me spending that much, too many other wants and needs. And I don't make money with it, mainly just clearing hunting property and my place.

Been looking for an older bush hog 406 today, supposedly rated for 4"

If you can find a heavy duty cutter for less then a grand then that makes the math a lot better. I guess it all just depends on intended uses. Basically I use my skid steer cutter for stuff that I can’t drive over with my tractor to mow. The thing is amazing. I am in west texas so we don’t really have huge trees here but I haven’t found anything it won’t cut yet. I have taken out 8” trees with it. Make sure people and things are well clear of the area. It easily throws dangerous sized debris 100’ out the front.
