Bought a used skid steer over the weekend, a 23 horse Deere. It's my first and I don't have alot of experience with a skid. I sharpened the leading edge of the bucket, and the two "shoes" on the side of the bucket. Yesterday I was trying to dig out some large saplings/small trees. I tried to catch the smaller roots with the corner of the bucket, but it seems to me that whoever welded the "shoes" on welded them a bit too far forward. The front edge of the shoe is even with the front edge of the bucket. Would it hurt anything if I cut about 2" of the shoe off and thereby exposing 2" of the corner of the bucket? I would also resharpen the freshly cut shoe.

I get a Ratchet Rake for the bucket from Tractor Supply

The bottom lip and corners are wear points never never sharpen them - you are destroying the tool.

Snagging a root or similar in a corner of the tool may bend torque and twist the loader boom arms, destroying the machine . ALWAYS grab from the center & lift evenly. You need to use the right tool - a grapple.

To dig virgin soil you need bucket teeth to rip soil loose & a skidloader that is radial lift. Vertical lift is less effective.

A smooth bucket is great for scooping already loose material.
