HAVE A CASE TRACTOR 595XL, HAS APPROX 80 HP , WHAT TYPE OF SLASHER IS SUITABLE. I WOULD LIKE A 5 FOOT SLASHER, WHAT IS THE GEAR BOX MINIMUM / MAX HP. THERE ARE SOME CHEAP ONES BEING OFFERED WITH SAY 46 HP GEAR BOXES , WHAT DOES THAT MEAN. I AM JUST A HOBBY FARMER. FORGOT TO MENTION MY OLD SLASHER 4 ' HAS JUST GIVEN UP

First, check your caps lock on your keyboard.
Second, you must be from England or Great Britain somewhere. "Slasher" is not a usual term in the U.S. for a Bush Hog, Brush Hog, rotary mower, rotary cutter, and probably other terms.
Third, a 5' mower on a 80 HP tractor is like driving a 10-penny nail with a sledgehammer. The HP of the mower is what HP it will take to disintegrate it.
You are going to need an extra heavy-duty mower to stand up to the 80 HP.
My 70 HP tractor runs a 8' LandPride RCR2596 with 100 HP center gear box and 60 HP outboard gear boxes (making 120 HP total outboard). That is what you might be considering.
At any rate, a mower that will cover the tires is what you should be looking for.

Well if your in Australia and you want a good mower then you should look into a Chris Grow Engineering mower. You can easily run a twin spindle mower with a tractor like yours or even the Delta Wing, but if your a hobby farmer that might be a little much. I wouldn't go less than a 7' mower with a tractor like yours. I use a 6' Bushhog 286 on my 40hp New Holland and it does just fine. What brands have you looked at?

Thanks for your reply, I now believe my tractor is only 52 HP, it's never stated in the Case hand book, strange, most 595XL in the USA are 52hp, so thats where I got it from. There are many Slashers to choose from, I will probably go for a 6' one as I am only a Hobby Farmer , in this part of the world there are many slashers offered by China at very cheap prices.

Sounds like a good plan. Just make sure the slasher is wide enough to cover the tire tracks.
The tires will push down the foliage being mowed and it will pop up later to make the job look ragged but mowing again the next day will clear that up.
If you only mow a couple of times a year a cheap mower may do the job well enough. If the area is rocky, has saplings, or the blades have an opportunity to hit the ground then a better mower may be in order.
The U.S. concept of Australia is that it is more of a vast desert-like terrain that wouldn't require much mowing.
