I just bought a slightly older KingKutter 6' rotor tiller. It has a slipclutch on it, but not the type with the tension springs on each bolt. It's just two plates bolted together with the slip discs between them. My question is, what is the correct process and specs on this type slip clutch? I know the adjustment with the spring loaded bolt style, but have had no experience with one without the springs on each bolt.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Not that I've seen everything, but I've never seen a slip clutch without springs. Is it possible someone removed the springs for some reason. A picture may help the more experienced crowd identify what you're working with.

Thanks Dennis. I'll try and get a picture posted this evening. I thought the same thing. Maybe someone removed the springs. However; the bolts don't appear long enough to accommodate those heavy tension springs. I'll check it out this afternoon.

I've seen some that use a belleville spring plate rather than coil springs. The spring plate looks like a large washer with holes spaced around it, and has holes aligned so it fits under the nuts (bolts arranged around clutch holding assembly together). The belleville shape puts pressure on the inner plate when the bolts are tightened fully. Usually, after fully tightening, they are loosened to leave a slight gap. That still leaves pressure between the plates as the belleville spring does it's thing.

On my land pride tiller, I loosen all the bolts, then tighten them finger tight using a star pattern. Then I use the star pattern again while tightening the bolts with a wrench, one rotation at a time to keep the tension equal on all the bolts.

Then it's out to the garden where I do the usual slip tests, slowly tightening until the clutch won't slip in hard ground, and hopefully it will slip when it finds a rock or root.

Does it look like this, if so the large nut is the adjustment nut for the discs. IMG_1200.JPG
