I have a TC33 with 3/9 transmission - I am using my in-laws KK Mower which he uses on an old 8N Jubilee - question - do I need to put a clutch on the PTO to protect the trans? The one he gave me does not fit the NH PTO shaft, seems to be too small dia. Before I buy one, I want to know if the modern tractors need a slip clutch, or if this is a legacy item with the Ford 8N.

From what I know about cutters (not much), you need either a slip clutch or a shear pin. There are many opinions about which is better, but for a borrowed implement either will suffice. I don't know if there is a way to adapt a shear pin to a cutter that had a clutch, but TSC usually stocks parts for KK. I'm sure someone here can tell exactly what you need, but maybe this will get you started since TSC should be open on Sundays

IT is probably an ORC (OverRunning Coupler). I had an 8N and that coupler was for two reasons. First, it did protect the transmission. Secondly, the old Ford's PTO stub was a different size than most modern PTO shafts - different number of splines if I remember right.

On the older tractors the transmission and PTO were linked in a way (no two-stage clutch) and could be damaged when the PTO kept turning (from the momentum of the brush hog blades), after the tractor was stopped and the clutch released. In some cases, it could actually push the tractor forward.

I hope that I'm remembering all that correctly, its been a few years.

Anyway, it is not a needed item on the modern tractors.

I'm sure you mean the ORC (OverRunning Coupler), but a properly adjusted slip clutch or shear pin still is needed.

Over running clutch causes rotation in one direction only (rotation driven by engine rather than implement). shear pin or slip clutch have to be there to protect pto mechanism and transmission.

Tom.. JC is correct.. the ORC IN NO WAY protects the tractor tranny.. all it does is act as a one way ratchet to prevent the rotary inertia built up in the cutter blades from translating back theru the non live pto that is tied to the drivetrain.

A slip clutch or shear pin is still needed.

Most likely the original poster is talking about an ORC.. and not a slip clutch.. and if it is a KK mower.. it likely has a shear pin.

Now.. what needs to be determined here is the tranny / clutch type.. and whether it is live or non live pto.

The 33 can be geared or HST.. hoever. the PTO will be live for either. ( independent I'm guessing for the HST.. but still live in any case... )

Thus if it has a live pto. then no.. a ORC is not needed... as the pto cannot backfeed the rear wheels via the tranny..

Thank you all for the feedback - the replies were correct - it is an overrunning clutch that was installed. I will depend upon a shear pin to protect my trans.
