Is a slip clutch a good idea on a tiller?
There is one on e-bay a kabota slip clutch. I was wondering if it would work on my yanmar tractor and tiller? does a slip clutch protect the pto on the tractor and the gear box and tines on the tiller?
Thanks Gary<><

A slip-clutch is a valuable asset on just about ANY PTO driven implement. As well as protecting the moving parts of the implement itself, they protect (from drive-line shock) the tractors PTO. I've seen a tractor with the rear flange of the engines CRANKSHAFT snapped off when a bush hog (WITHOUT slip clutch, and the shear bolt replaced with a grade 8 bolt) hit a tree stump.

Not only should a tiller have a slip clutch, but that clutch should be serviced (per manufacturers specs) on a seasonal basis.

Yes; a slip clutch properly maintained is a very good idea. One that is not adjusted properly is just a usless extension to the drive line.

If your tiller is a gray market model, I would check to see if the splines are the same as the clutch before I bought it.

And, if you pay more than $60 + shipping it is not a good deal. They can be had from Agri-Supply for around $60.

And, I'll add my personal experience with adding a slip clutch. Make sure you shorten the PTO shaft by the same amount that the slip clutch takes up. Otherwise, when you raise the implement, you will drive the PTO shaft into the rear of your tractor with great force. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Not good, not good.

Tractor and tiller are both grey. I think I had better invest in a slip clutch as there is no shortage rock here /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I looked on line at agri supply I am not sure which shaft I have? Count splines and measure /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifpto.glad I didn't buy the $120 e-bay clutch /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifprobably wrong size and double price.
