Rotary mowers, some finish mowers, Post hole diggers, tillers, and just about anything that is PTO powered and engages the ground has some form of drive line protection. It's usually either a shear pin or slip clutch. What these devices do is prevent damage to the tractor drive train by failing if the implement get "stuck" on some immovable object (stump, rock, etc.) A shear pin is a metal rod that is inserted through the PTO coupling and the smooth input shaft of the implement, and is designed to break off and allow the PTO and shaft before the implement to continue spinning. A slip clutch does the same thing but is two interlocking plates that are held togther with springs and "slip" at a predetermined torque to protect the drive train.

Hmmm, I don't really feel that I've described this very good. I'm positive that if you searched the archives oyu would find several discussions about slip clutches.

Yes do the search and learn. I like bot a shear pin and a slip clutch. If the slip clutch sticks the pin/bolt still shears protecting my tractor. Remember to service/adjust your slip clutch at the beginning of each mowing season, they stick.

With my King Kutter tiller, the PTO drive line's slip clutch has a splined (tongue/grooves that run the length of the sleeve) sleeve connected to the splined shaft of the tiller gear box. In fact all the slip clutches I've seen have a splined output. If the tiller binds, the slip clutch slips and the shaft is free to turn on the tractor side of the clutch. If the clutch fails to slip, having a shear pin wouldn't help as the splines would keep things connected.

With my King Kutter finish mower, the drive line's connection to the mower gear box is a smooth sleeve over a smooth shaft with a cross drilled hole thru both. With a grade 2 bolt (shear pin) holding the two together. It the mower binds, this bolt breaks and the drive shaft is free to turn on the gear box shaft since they are both smooth.

My Ford Rotary mower also uses a shear pin arrangement .

Good luck

I think slowrev is talking about an aftermarket addition of a slipclutch.. like.. go to tsc.. buy one with a smooth output end.. use the shearpin to couple it to the gearbox.. then ue the splined male end to hook your driveshaft yoke to.

Best of both worlds.

My howse10' is like yours.. splined shaft that an integral to the pto shaft, slipclutch goes hooks to.
